"Located in the city of Victoria, St. Michaels University School is a boarding and day school with a global reputation for academic excellence. Students from around the world are challenged by an extensive curriculum, including Canada’s most established Advanced Placement program with 25 courses and the AP Capstone Diploma. Intellectual stimulation combined with exceptional values-based athletics, arts and leadership programs make SMUS a school that inspires excellence in all students while preparing them for life."
"The Outdoor Leadership course focusses on both technical outdoor skills and leadership development. Where possible, we also try to include opportunities for formal certification to help students build strong outdoor resumes filled with certifications as well as experiences. In many cases, this has helped students gain outdoor summer jobs and admission to universities. As an example, a number of students in recent OL grad classes are certified Level 1 Sea Kayak guides, have Paddle Canada and Wilderness First Aid certifications and have summer employment lined up in the outdoor industry!"
"The SMUS Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 program is an intentionally designed journey where meeting the personal needs of each individual learner is paramount.
Every stage is planned around the development of students at that age and stage, and what they need to be successful. The objective at all stages is to develop the whole student, encouraging a balance of core academic skills with arts, athletics, leadership, outdoor education and service. In addition, we aim to foster a love of learning which prepares students well for progress at school and in their future lives.
SMUS graduates are purpose-driven individuals, empowered both with strong academic fundamentals as well as the skills and confidence to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century."
"St. Michaels University School was formed in 1971, when University School (founded in 1906) and St. Michael's School (founded in 1910) amalgamated.
Both began as boys schools modelled after English public schools. University School was primarily boarding with a strong military heritage. St. Michael's School was very much the life passion of K.C. Symons, who founded the school and was its head until 1948.
Through a series of challenges, both schools kept their traditions alive until they combined in 1971. This amalgamation celebrated in our 50 year Jubilee was a momentous event and paved the way for astonishing growth. Of most importance was the school becoming co-educational in 1978 when girls were admitted for the first time.
These foundations have led to a school of strong repute, known throughout the world as one of Canada's most successful and prestigious independent schools."
"The students and families who will benefit most from a SMUS education are those who value academic excellence and holistic development. These families are likely seeking a school that places a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, as demonstrated by SMUS students' impressive proficiency and extending scores on provincial assessments. This focus on foundational skills means that students who are motivated and curious about building strong academic competencies will thrive here.
Moreover, the ideal SMUS family values a well-rounded educational experience. They appreciate opportunities for their children to explore diverse interests and develop talents in areas such as the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and leadership. Students who are open to engaging in various extracurricular activities, whether it's joining clubs, councils, or participating in sports, will find a wealth of pathways to nurture their interests and passions."
"While SMUS offers a rich and well-rounded educational experience, it may not be the best fit for all families. For those seeking a school with a single-minded focus on academics or a particular area—such as specialized training exclusively in STEM or arts—SMUS’s balanced approach may feel less aligned with their goals. Our curriculum emphasizes both foundational academic skills and a broad range of extracurricular and experiential learning opportunities, which may not resonate with families who prefer a more narrowly focused or highly specialized academic environment.
Additionally, SMUS’s emphasis on active engagement in arts, athletics, leadership, and outdoor education means that students are encouraged to participate broadly. Families looking for an academic environment with minimal expectations for extracurricular involvement might not find this approach ideal, as we believe in fostering well-rounded students who explore multiple areas of interest."
"Families choose SMUS over other schools primarily because of its strong academic track record and commitment to developing well-rounded, articulate, and skilled individuals. The school’s exceptional outcomes in literacy and numeracy assessments, where students consistently outperform provincial and independent school averages, give families confidence in SMUS’s ability to deliver an academically rigorous program. Many families recognize that the school’s structured focus on foundational academic skills provides their children with a competitive edge and prepares them well for future educational pursuits.
Another reason families choose SMUS is its extensive range of enhanced programs and extracurricular opportunities. Current families appreciate that SMUS goes beyond traditional academics by offering specialized instruction in areas such as the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and leadership. This diverse programming allows students to discover and cultivate new passions and talents"
"Our school has a local and global reputation for excellence. Students from all over the world are attracted to study with us and many of our graduates attend the best universities in Canada, the US and the world.
From the earliest years, core academic skills are balanced with a program enriched with the arts, athletics, outdoor education, leadership and service with the aim of developing the 'whole student.' Each step is developmentally appropriate, academically rigourous, personally rewarding and joyful.
The SMUS Mission includes the words: "Preparation for Life" and this is at the core of the education we provide. SMUS students are strong, confident and purpose-driven individuals. They are articulate, problem-solvers and leaders, and they care about the world around them and how they can make it a better place."

"In alignment with our strategic goal to enhance the learning environment for our students, the Trottier-Morgan Annex was built and opened in September 2023, marking the culmination of a new and transformative chapter for our school.
The completion of the Junior School's Trottier-Morgan Annex project has provided new teaching and learning spaces for current students, along with adding a much in-demand Junior Kindergarten program to SMUS. The construction which began in March 2022, was completed at the end of summer of 2023, in time for the opening of the 2023-24 school year.
We are pleased to announce that the construction of the Middle School expansion has begun.
In the SMUS Middle School, we foster inquiry-based and project-based learning, encouraging students to delve deep, unleash their creativity, and embrace new skills. Since 1992, there has been remarkable growth in both student enrolment and faculty and with that growth comes a need for expanded facilities."
"Floreat is an ambitious strategic plan centred around four Strategic Priorities: Foundation, Preparation for Life, Sustainability, and Community. These four priorities encapsulate what we will focus on to achieve excellence in all areas, with student success at the centre of everything we do. Foundation is the bedrock of our school. It recognizes the importance of being confident but not complacent in who we are, as we build for the future. Preparation for Life outlines how we will strengthen each aspect of our students’ educational experiences so they are ready for the world. Sustainability captures how we will invest in our future from both an environmental and financial perspective. Community underscores the role each of us plays in supporting our students and our school through to 2030 and beyond. Through the next 10 years, this dynamic and transformational strategic plan will be our guide to building a school that will continue to grow into the best independent school in Canada."
