Interview with Blyth Academy The Glebe, Ottawa Alum, Fawaz Audu
Fawaz, an alumnus of Blyth Academy The Glebe, Ottawa, shared his perspective on the school's caring and committed staff, small class sizes fostering a personal learning experience, and the supportive environment that helped him develop good study habits, ultimately preparing him well for university and endorsing the school to prospective families.
Highlights from the interview
The staff at Blyth Academy really cared about the students, from the person at the front desk who would smile and say ‘hi’ every morning to the teachers and principal. I feel like there was this community in a sense because there were fewer students in classes, so the teachers knew each of us by name. You could always go to them after class and have a conversation about the class you didn't understand or personal stuff, and they were always willing to listen. There's a community sense because we all know each other, and it feels like everybody is able to be themselves.
The teachers at Blyth Academy were committed to ensuring we understood the lessons before tests, and we all achieved good grades. If some of us didn't understand the topic, they'd go over it and over it. We had practice videos or other resources to help us. They were really committed to doing their job, and they made sure we were prepared for exams. I feel like the staff really cared about the students, and their dedication was evident in the way they taught and supported us.
The smaller class sizes at Blyth Academy provided a more personal learning experience. The teachers can know everyone personally, which helps because the teacher understands each person's weak points and strong points. Compared to a school where there are like 40 kids in a class, this was what surprised me the most. The smaller classes created a community feeling, making it easier to form bonds with classmates and teachers alike.
Before coming to Blyth Academy, I didn't really care about school, but the supportive environment helped me develop good study habits. I figured I had to study, and with all the materials and teachers' help, I knew all I had to do was focus on studying. This preparation was invaluable as it has prepared me for university life. I can see how everything they did over my time there, like talking to the teachers, studying, and the community sense, was important.
To families looking at Blyth Academy, I'd say it's a great decision. You can leave your kids in the right hands, with people who care about them. If the students are ready to put in the work, they will do really well and be prepared for life after secondary school. The sense of community and the commitment of the staff make it a place where you don't feel alone, and everyone cares about your success.
