Overall Experience 4.5
When I think back to my time at Brentwood, I remember the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself. Coming from a very different background, I didn’t know what to expect at first. But I quickly found a home, especially in Mack House, where we were more like family than just dormmates. Our houseparents, especially Mr. Robinson, made it special. I still smile thinking about the nights we were on duty and he’d surprise us with tea and snacks while checking in on how our classes were going. Brentwood gave me so many opportunities, from the ceramics studio where I won the H.O. Smith Bowl, to being a prefect and learning what real leadership means. It wasn’t always easy, the academic pace was fast, and sometimes I missed home, but I never felt alone. The support was always there, whether it came from teachers like Mr. Garvey or friends from all over the world. If I could change one thing, I’d say I wish there had been more open conversations about mental health at the time. But looking at the school now, I see they’ve been improving on that front.
School Leadership 5
One thing that stood out to me at Brentwood was how visible and approachable the leadership team was. You’d see Mr. Patel walking around campus, chatting with students or stopping by the dining hall. It didn’t feel like there was a huge gap between students and administration. I remember there were times when students had concerns like changes in schedules or rules we didn’t fully agree with, and while we didn’t always get the answers we hoped for, we felt heard. I appreciated that. There was a sense that the school was open to feedback and that they were constantly trying to improve. In Mackenzie House, our houseparents were like our day-to-day leaders, and they set the tone for what leadership at Brentwood meant: supportive, structured, but always with a sense of care. Mr. Robinson especially had a way of making us feel seen and not just as students, but as people with stories, goals, and struggles. Discipline, when it happened, felt more like guidance than punishment. It was about learning from your mistakes rather than just being “in trouble.” All in all, Brentwood’s leadership helped create a space where students felt supported, challenged, and respected. Not everything was perfect, but the effort to lead with integrity was always there.
Teaching 5
The teachers at Brentwood were honestly one of the best parts of my experience. They didn’t just teach, but they cared. I always felt like my teachers saw more than just my grades or attendance; they saw me as a whole person, with potential and a story that mattered. There was this balance between high expectations and deep compassion. I remember Ms. Reynolds in English — she had this way of pushing us to think critically, to go beyond just “what happened in the story” and ask why it mattered. Mr. Gage, who taught Economics, made the subject come alive for me. His passion was contagious, and it’s actually one of the reasons I became interested in economic systems in the first place. Another thing I appreciated was how informal the student-teacher dynamic could be, in the best way. We respected them, but we could also joke around and have real conversations. Mr. Robinson, for instance, was both my houseparent and my teacher, and he somehow managed to balance both roles beautifully. He’d host tea nights, help with assignments, and talk us through challenges in and out of the classroom. Brentwood teachers didn’t just prepare me academically — they helped me build confidence, resilience, and a true love for learning. That’s a gift I still carry with me.
Academics 5
The academic program at Brentwood challenged me in the best way. It was never about just memorizing facts or checking boxes, but also it was about learning how to think, how to ask questions, and how to keep pushing forward even when things got tough. Looking back, I can confidently say Brentwood prepared me really well for university, especially in terms of time management, critical thinking, and academic writing. What stood out most to me was the supportive culture. Yes, the academics were rigorous, though you couldn’t really coast, but there was always someone ready to help. Teachers offered office hours, and we had peer tutors available, too. And if you were struggling, people noticed and stepped in. I always felt like I was surrounded by a community that genuinely wanted me to succeed. The atmosphere among students was more collaborative than competitive. Of course, we all wanted to do well, but it wasn’t cutthroat. I remember group study sessions in the common room before exams, where we’d quiz each other or explain concepts out loud. Those moments helped build not just knowledge but friendship. One thing Brentwood does really well is give students choice and flexibility in what they study, especially in the senior years. I had the chance to explore subjects that interested me deeply, like economics and business, which turned out to shape my future path. The academic counsellors also helped a lot with course planning to make sure I was on track for the university programs I was aiming for. Honestly, I wouldn’t change much about the academics at Brentwood. They pushed me, supported me, and helped me build habits I still rely on today.
Extracurriculars 4.5
At Brentwood’s there was something for everyone. I especially loved volleyball and strength training, which helped me stay balanced and energized. The school encouraged us to try new things, and that’s how I discovered my interest in ceramics and public speaking. These activities weren’t just for fun, but they helped me grow in confidence, discipline, and leadership. It was amazing being part of a community that valued learning outside the classroom just as much as academics.
Students 5
Brentwood’s student body was incredibly diverse and not just in terms of nationality, but also in interests, personalities, and life stories. I met students from places I’d only ever read about, and we connected over shared experiences, differences, and dreams. The school fostered an environment where everyone had space to express themselves, whether through the arts, sports, or academics. I remember how being kind, inclusive, and authentic earned the most respect from peers, but not necessarily being the loudest or the best at something. There was a genuine sense of community, especially within houses. Of course, like anywhere, some cliques formed, but most people got along well. I still keep in touch with a few close friends, and I’m thankful for the friendships I built during my time there.
School Life 5
Life at Brentwood was a mix of structure and freedom. I genuinely loved being there. The routine was busy because of classes, sports, arts, and house duties, but it was balanced in a way that didn’t feel overwhelming. What made it special was how much care went into making students feel at home. My housemates were like siblings, and our houseparents made such a difference, always available, always kind. Mackenzie House especially had a great vibe. There was also a lot of laughter in between the deadlines. Sure, sometimes we were stressed (especially during exam week), but we always had people to lean on. The view of the ocean never got old, as it gave a calmness that helped when things got intense. Brentwood wasn’t perfect, but it gave me a life I still look back on with real gratitude.
Community 5
Brentwood’s community felt like home to me as well as like my second family, as we supported each other, laughed together, and even helped one another through academic struggles. I’ve stayed in touch with so many of my friends from school, and the alumni network is strong. Outside the dorms, the sense of community extended to sports, clubs, and weekend activities. Parents were very much involved, especially during special events and performances. Even now, as an alum, I’ve kept in touch with friends from all over the world. That international network is something I truly value, and it reminds me that Brentwood isn’t just a school I attended, it’s a community I’ll always belong to. The friendships I formed at Brentwood are ones I still cherish. Even after graduation, the school is still a part of my life.
School Location 4.5
Brentwood’s location is honestly one of the first things that takes your breath away, or at least it took mine; it's right by the ocean, surrounded by forest and mountains. It felt like living in a dream. Because of its isolated nature, we mostly stayed on campus, but there were moments when trips to Duncan or Victoria gave us a chance to explore. Still, the campus was so full of life and activities that it never really felt like we were missing out.
Admissions 4.5
The admissions process at Brentwood was one of the first times I felt truly seen as more than just a student on paper. Coming from abroad all the way from Africa, I was nervous, but the team, especially the person who interviewed me, made me feel comfortable sharing my story. They asked about my background, my goals, even my interests outside of school. It wasn’t just about whether I met their standard, but it was about whether Brentwood was the right place for me. That level of care gave me confidence. I knew I was walking into a supportive environment. My advice? Be honest, be yourself, and don’t be afraid to share your passions and goals.
University placement and counselling 4.5
Brentwood’s university counselling program was a major source of support in my final year. I wasn’t just given lists of schools, but I was encouraged to think deeply about what kind of environment I wanted to grow in. When I found out about the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship to a university in Ghana, my counsellor didn’t hesitate to help me prepare. From editing my essays to practicing for interviews, they were there every step of the way. I still remember sitting in the counselling office, overwhelmed by possibilities, and being told, “You’re more than capable.” That moment stuck with me. Thanks to their guidance, I earned a full-ride to a school that fits me perfectly. Brentwood made sure I didn’t just get into a university, but I got into the right one for me.
