re: New Sex Ed Curriculum in Public Schools

SEX-ED TOO SOON

Our personal conviction is that the material in the new sex education curriculum is being brought in much too soon, sexualizing our children when they have not yet reached puberty and have little reason to be overly interested in sex.

We should be using these precious early years to teach them to become fluent readers, to gain the ability to write well, to be competent in math and to develop a real love of learning so they will be able to succeed in our fast-changing world. We also strongly object to the idea of the government taking away the rights of parents to determine what should or should not be taught to their kids, especially on such a personal matter as sex education. 

The word “educate” comes from Greek and means “to lead out.” Properly done, it is never forced. As teachers, we should never be placed in a position of forcing children to learn something that goes against the wishes of their parents. Rather, we should be extensions of the family, helping parents to educate their children in order to develop the innate and unique interests and abilities of each of the children in our charge.
