Interview with Rothesay Netherwood School Alum, Erin Usher

The most valuable part of Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS) for me is the relationships I formed during a student’s time there. This includes friendships with classmates, bonds with teachers and house parents, and connections with fellow boarders. These relationships remain strong even after students leave, allowing them to reconnect effortlessly, no matter how much time has passed. The support network built at RNS is invaluable and something that many alumni deeply appreciate.

One of the defining characteristics of RNS is the level of support students receive, which sets it apart from public schools and potentially other private boarding schools. The faculty is dedicated to helping students succeed both academically and personally, offering guidance and encouragement in challenging times. The school’s incredible 200-acre campus, surrounded by green spaces and forests, also contributes to its unique identity. Its location within a welcoming community provides students with numerous opportunities for involvement beyond the school grounds.

The culture at RNS is built around inclusivity and a strong sense of belonging. From the moment students step onto campus, they are made to feel at home. The school fosters an environment where individuality is respected, allowing students to maintain their unique identities while being part of a larger community. The values of inclusivity and support are evident in the relationships between students, faculty, and house parents, creating a school culture that prioritizes both personal and academic well-being.

School spirit is another key aspect of the RNS experience. Events like Rugby Fest bring the community together, while academics also serve as a point of connection, especially for older students facing increased workloads. Boarding life further strengthens student relationships, as they spend most of their time on campus together, creating a close-knit and supportive environment. Even day students, who often stay after school for extracurriculars and dinner, are immersed in the communal atmosphere, forming lasting friendships.

Events like the annual cheer-off and paint war foster camaraderie and school spirit, making these traditions a highlight of student life.

The academically rigorous environment can be demanding, and while day students have the option to take mental health days, boarders often find it more difficult to take time off. However, RNS has made meaningful progress in addressing this issue by creating dedicated wellness spaces and quiet rooms for students to prioritize their mental well-being.

Over time, many alumni grow to appreciate aspects of RNS that they may have struggled with as students. The school maintains high academic expectations and enforces structured study times, which can feel strict at first. However, these practices prepare students for university life, fostering discipline and a strong work ethic. Many graduates recognize that these experiences played a crucial role in their success beyond RNS.
