Agate Private School was created to reflect the Sudbury Model of education, which gets its name from the Sudbury Valley School founded in 1968 in Framingham, Massachusetts. An experimental school at the time, there are now more than 60 schools around the world that identify as Sudbury schools, all reflecting a core belief in educational freedom within a democratic learning environment. It’s an example of the free school movement, established in Europe in the 1920s, and perhaps peaking in the US in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a response to regimented learning of the kind that we still think of as stereotypically "school": students in rows of desks, learning a set curriculum in consort with their peers, and following a set schedule. In a sense, some of the core concepts of free schooling—instruction that is personal, student-directed, unregimented—have filtered their way into even the most traditional school settings today. Classrooms furniture is varied, with areas for quiet reading, group collaboration, etc. But Agate is an example of all of that and then some. Students guide their learning, choose how to spend their time, and follow their personal instincts. And, just as the Sudbury Valley School, or the Summerhill School in the UK—and indeed Agate itself—the model has proven itself effective. Perhaps it’s not the school for every student, though, indeed, there’s no school that is. The families that turn to Agate find a place where students are challenged to grow and learn in new ways. And they do.

Gr. 2 (current),Gr. 2 (current) — My children love the freedom to follow the topics and interests that currently have their natural focus; they have the support to learn what they want to and aren't forced to memorize anything they're not authentically interested in.
I wish I were closer to Agate to visit but truthfully I have little physical experience to go on.
Gayle has an amazing wealth of resources both online and in real life and I would be welcome there as often as I could go. When we did visit, there was one other child and parent and I believe they were there a few times a week at the time and few other families visited regularly.
Basically, Agate has a large and supportive online community and a small and supportive IRL community if you can get there!
Gr. 11,K to Gr. 12,Gr. 4 (current) — My grandchild truly enjoys the freedom to follow her own curiosities and be able to dig deep as her curiosity dictates. She enjoys the interactions she has online with other pupils as well as the principal. She very much likes that she doesn't have the stress of tests or comparisons to other pupils. This program has given her the time and space to regain her curiosity and imagination after numerous years of expected conformity where she did not feel she was heard nor appreciated. She has learned to be more comfortable with making mistakes and no longer feels she is judged negatively for them. This has allowed her to take more risks and discover more things that interest her. This has given her more confidence to meet head-on things that are challenging for her.
Gr. 3 (current) — I love Agate Private School. My son is learning at a faster rate with far more retention. I am able to accommodate his needs. He loves school, loves learning, and asks intelligent questions.
I wish I knew about this school from the beginning of my child's school journey, I would have started him much sooner. I wouldn't change anything about our school. There is no pressure, he can learn at his own pace. His rate of learning has increased, and his ability to have input on his own schedule and learning has increased his confidence and independence. Our principal goes over and above, giving academic support for my son as well as emotional/mental support for me! We have the freedom to really learn with our school. So happy!
JK (current),JK (current) — At Agate Private School, my child's homeschooling experience has been nothing short of exceptional. The flexibility to tailor the curriculum to my child's unique learning style and interests has been particularly appreciated. Unlike traditional schooling, where one-size-fits-all approaches often leave some students feeling overlooked or disengaged, Agate Private School recognizes the importance of personalized education. This tailored approach has allowed my child to delve deeply into subjects of interest, fostering a genuine passion for learning and encouraging curiosity and exploration.
What my child likes best about Agate Private School is the freedom it offers. Free from the constraints of a rigid curriculum, my child has the autonomy to chart his own educational path, selecting topics and projects that captivate his interest. This freedom not only cultivates a sense of ownership over his learning journey but also instills a love for discovery and inquiry.
Moreover, the personalized support from Agate's educators has been invaluable. From providing guidance on selecting appropriate learning materials to offering feedback on assignments and projects, the teachers at Agate Private School are dedicated to ensuring that each student receives the support they need to succeed. This individualized attention has not only boosted my child's academic confidence but has also nurtured a sense of belonging within the school community.
Gr. 2 to Gr. 4 — Ari was really able to thrive with the help of Gayle. She is so good at bringing out the best in her students in helping them find their passions and interest. My daughter Ari came to really enjoy learning in this open environment. Gayle also helped me let go of any preconceived notions about alternative education. My daughter, for instance, took an interest in playing the ukulele but I had no idea of any resources to help her learn. All I had to do was ask Gayle and she had all the answers. My daughter loves soccer and really wanted to play so the school put together a homeschooling soccer practice day for all children interested. Gayle has a wealth of knowledge and you can't go wrong by being a part of Agate Private School.
