Lewis Cirne, TCS '89

The Cirne Scholarships

At 14 years old, Lewis Cirne was excited and grateful to be enrolling in a private school, made possible only by the financial assistance offered to his family.

Today, an accomplished entrepreneur and philanthropist, Lewis Cirne ’89 greatly credits his alma mater, Trinity College School (TCS) in Port Hope, for his success. “Thanks to the great generosity of people before me, I was able to receive financial aid and come to the school. That never has left my mind.”

As such, Mr. Cirne chose to give back, in a big way. He established the Cirne National Scholarships — four merit-based, full-tuition, four-year scholarships for Canadian boarding students. Currently, the school is looking to award a scholarship to a promising student entering Grade 9 in fall 2018. The scholarship is merit-based and includes full-tuition for the duration of the recipients’ studies in the boarding school program at TCS.

A History of Academic Excellence

Located on 100 acres of rolling countryside in scenic Port Hope, Ontario (one hour east of Toronto), Trinity College School welcomes students from Grades 5 to 12.  Established in 1865, Trinity College School is one of Canada’s oldest and most respected educational institutions.  This co-educational, independent boarding and day school values perseverance, courage, creativity, compassion and integrity in its academics, athletics and the arts.

TCS is one of only 10 schools in Canada selected by the College Board to offer the innovative Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone Diploma, a two-year programme of study for Grade 11 and 12 students that emphasizes critical thinking, collaborative problem solving and research skills in a cross-curricular context.

“We know that fostering curiosity, encouraging a thirst for knowledge and teaching our students to be reception to change, will serve them well for the unforeseeable future,” says Admissions Officer Adrienne Ross.  The AP Capstone Diploma enriches the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) by further preparing students for university and provides Trinity College graduates with the opportunity to distinguish themselves on international university applications, particularly in the U.S. and U.K.

An emphasis on lifelong learning is carried out through the community of the school. “Collaborative learning, problem solving, perseverance, compassion,” says Ross, “those are the things that will give them a strong foundation when they leave the school.”

The deadline for applications is February 9th, 2018. For full details on the scholarship and the application process, click here, or contact the Trinity College School admissions department by email at admissions@tcs.on.ca
