Dedicated teachers at private school

When most people think of school, they assume the students are the ones who learn. But at Kingsway College School (KCS), in Etobicoke, Ontario, everyone, especially the teachers, are expected to engage in lifelong learning.

According to the assistant head of academics at KCS, Andrea Fanjoy, the majority of the faculty at KCS has multiple degrees from esteemed institutions, and engages in their subjects outside of school as well. KCS uses the technique of online curriculum "mapping," which allows teachers to monitor the progress of each other's classes, collaborate to seek out gaps or new opportunities within the curriculum, even watch for warning signs that may suggest a particular student is falling behind. Then they can work together to effect change in the school that is positive and consistent. Even students can have their say through KCS's student voice program.

Katie and Michael, both Grade 8 students, say they feel comfortable with all the teachers they've had at KCS. Katie can still count on her Grade 7 homeroom teacher to make sure she's organized, and Michael's running technique continues to improve with help from his phys-ed teacher.

"At KCS, if you're having trouble they give you as much help as you need. And they don't get angry when you're not doing something right," Michael says.

"The teachers make [the school] so much more welcoming. They're kind, and really want you to succeed. But they also want to challenge you," says Katie. "It's a great aspect in a school."
