Qualitative insights

The school's academic excellence has a strong impact.
Insights from students and alumni reveal that Havergal College fosters a dual focus on academic and athletic excellence, enabling students to excel in multiple areas and pursue diverse interests in university.
Sending your child to Havergal will challenge them, it will push them, it will inspire them, and it will create a foundation that they can always come back to. Whatever it is that that girl wants to pursue, they will have the tools in their toolkit. Now, they will have to use it, they will have to walk through that door, but Havergal will open every possible door for them and allow them to be whoever they want to be. With such a strong foundation, they will have the ability to continue to excel.
Havergal encouraged me to pursue the academic side, absolutely, but also the athletic side that I pursued in university and to figure out how could I do both, and make sure that I was doing both to a level of excellence, and a level that challenged me in that academic component and in the athletic component.
Havergal College influenced the area of study I chose in university and it influenced what I was looking for in my undergrad experience, as well as the athletic component. At Havergal, I was an athlete. My coaches were inspirational to me and had a lasting impact. But as well, in Grade 12 at Havergal, I had the opportunity of taking a kinesiology class, which at that time was new to the high school curriculum. That, coupled with the support of my coaches and the science teachers at Havergal College, allowed me to pursue science with more specialization on the human body, which definitely, definitely influenced my decision to go into kinesiology in university.
Havergal has produced very successful alumni for over a hundred years. This success comes from strong core values it instills in its students. Havergal values hard work and helps prepare each girl for life “beyond the Ivy Walls.” It has a strong academic program that promotes camaraderie and healthy competition among peers. Havergal wants each girl to succeed and provides learning support when needed. The academic program intensifies as the years progress, however a philosophy of a balanced life is simultaneously emphasized. The girls are taught to mange their time accordingly, not only to complete academic requirements, but to participate in a variety of extracurricular and sporting activities. This balance produces a “whole girl” with physical and emotional wellness. With this realization of a balanced life, the student will achieve academic success.

Having developed good habits and work ethic gives them an advantage.
Observations from the Havergal community indicate that the rigorous environment and core values of the school cultivate a strong work ethic and critical thinking skills among students, setting them up for success in university and beyond.
I developed such a strong work ethic there, because any time I turned around, someone was studying very hard, working very hard on whatever projects they were doing, in addition to for example waking up at 5 a.m. to go to the lake with the rowing team. That work ethic was instilled in me really early, so that when I went to college in American schools, I was not shocked by the workload, and I wasn’t shocked by having to work hard. I was just like, ‘Oh, I’ve done this before, I know how to do this.’
For my daughters, who are now in grad school, one of the biggest impacts was the fact that they were taught to think critically, to question. They entered university with an ability to express their ideas, and to communicate. It was a standard that was far above where their peers were at, and that was so valuable to them. They didn’t realize just how valuable until they had moved onto university.
With one Havergal "Old Girl" entering her fourth year of University and another graduating Havergal this year, I whole heartedly believe they are well-prepared for their next steps. The workload is heavy at times but manageable. Learning time management has been critical. The school has done a lot of investigation into how to maximize the success of teenage girls and have been very cutting edge on many levels - providing late starts on Wednesdays, encouraging girls to speak up and speak out at Prayers three times a week, structuring House and TA so that girls can connect with smaller groups of teachers and students and feel successful and emotionally safe in a school with rigorous academics. I feel that everything Havergal does is very purposeful; always considering their students needs first.

They receive guidance and assistance with applications.
Comments from parents and administrators highlight Havergal College's dedication to providing a supportive and purposeful environment, with initiatives from the Guidance Department designed to maximize each student's success and navigate the university application process seamlessly.
Havergal encouraged me to look at the different facets of university, and the different roles university would play in my life, and that undergrad was Step One of many more to come, and think about how I could keep as many doors open as possible.
The Guidance Department was amazing throughout the whole university process. One of our daughters will be attending college in the US and the application process to US schools is much more complicated and detailed than the Canadian application process. Guidance was on top of everything - starting long before the girls even knew where they were applying. They are knowledgeable and help the girls navigate the different websites, standardize tests and application requirements. The Guidance Department ran several meetings with Grade 11 and 12 parents to educate us on the process and met throughout the year with the girls to make sure they were being followed throughout the process so that nothing slipped through the cracks. For both of my girls, this process was seamless.
