Qualitative insights

Tailored university preparation is offered.

Observations from students, alumni, and parents indicate that Hillfield Strathallan College offers personalized and comprehensive university counselling and preparation, aiding students at every stage of the application process and ensuring seamless transitions to post-secondary education.

The university counselling program at Hillfield Strathallan College aided in every stage of my university placement. I was supported from when I began to educate myself on potential schools to when I full accepted my offer. Through guest speakers, information nights and one on one university prep I never doubted my chances of reaching my full potential. I do feel as if i was given the appropriate guidance in a timely fashion to apply successfully to my first-choice post-secondary programs. has an excellent record of students attending post-secondary institution. I was able throughout the application process to turn to not only my counsellor but teachers, alumni and experts in my field of study. I was able to confidently apply to the top schools in Canada knowing I had a support system at Hillfield Strathallan College.
As parents, my husband and I didn’t grow up in Canada. We don’t really know what we have to do for university application. Thank goodness, there are counsellors at the school. My 12th-grader son had to see his counsellor almost every day during applications. The counsellor is very patient and kind. All counsellors had a parent night to notify what we should do and when deadlines are. We trust counsellors. There’s no way they would let our kids mess up. What a relief. The counsellors also communicated with parents. I got an email from my son’s counsellor to be updated on his progress. The counsellors organized a few university fairs at the school. That was very informative and convenient. All the counsellors are very responsible and knowledgeable, which is helpful, especially for overseas applications.
Life at Hillfield Strathallan College (HSC) is busy and exciting. I love it. I joined HSC in Grade 9 after hearing about it from my older sister and I was excited to see a lot of people around me getting involved and doing activities like I was. I enjoy how there are a variety of courses and activities for a variety of interests. This helps everyone find a place to fit in. If I could change one thing about my school, it would be the focus on going to university. This has always been the plan for me, so I have not found it to be a major issue but I know it does impact students. This has been getting better over the past couple of years, but there is still a culture of pushing people towards university. I think it is important to understand each student's skills and to push them towards something they'll excel in.

Robust academic and extracurricular opportunities are offered.

Feedback from the HSC community highlights that the college provides extensive opportunities in both academic and extracurricular realms, allowing students to explore their passions, develop leadership skills, and build vital networks for their future.

Hillfield Strathallan College provides a sense of mentorship, and many opportunities. I mean opportunities provided in the academic setting, as well as in extracurriculars, and the opportunities to explore your passions. Hillfield Strathallan College always provided opportunities to play sports, but they also provide opportunities to learn about universities, and career paths. I'm grateful for the opportunities that were provided that really helped me further my own interests, and the opportunities to build a sense of community at the school.
What I appreciated most about Hillfield Strathallan College would be the opportunities we had outside the classroom. Hillfield Strathallan College provided a top-quality education, but I feel like it built so much more in terms of my character development. There's a really big push towards getting involved in extracurriculars, and exploring leadership opportunities, which played a role in some of the decisions I took on later. During my fourth year of university, I was the President of the Dan Management Students Association, which is the undergraduate association for the Western Business program. I was also heavily involved in councils, starting up my own clubs, and things like that as well. It was foundations that Hillfield Strathallan College embodied that allowed me to carry on some of those really great skill sets when I moved into post-secondary.
We have nothing negative to say about HSC. Our family loves the school. We will never be regretful of sending my kids to HSC. The school provides lots of opportunities for kids, such as extracurricular programs, sports clubs, model UN, etc. The school always provides transportation for kids’ extracurricular activities. Parents know our children are in good hands at the school. They love the food in Lawson Hall. All the teachers and faculty are nice. We never hesitate to reach out if we have any concerns. My kids were shy in the beginning but the school encouraged them to be confident and to learn how to talk, make a speech, etc. I’m amazed by my kids’ presentation skills now. It’s truly amazing to see what they’ve learned for so many years. I’m confident that the school helps our kids to be ready for university.

There is strong alumni and community support.

Testimonies from current students and alumni suggest that Hillfield Strathallan College benefits from a passionate and engaged alumni network, many of whom return as parents or faculty, enhancing the school’s tight-knit, supportive community.

Hillfield Strathallan College does a great job of bringing in alumni to speak about university experiences. You learn a lot about post-secondary from an academic and extracurricular point of view.

The curriculum is diverse and engaging.

Observations from students reveal that Hillfield Strathallan College offers a diverse curriculum that caters to a wide range of interests, helping each student find a place to thrive.

Throughout my time at HSC, I had the opportunity to make so many special memories that picking one is almost impossible. I will never forget the amazing atmosphere in each classroom and how each student was treated as an individual-with unique strengths and skills to be further cultivated. With opportunity to excel in so many different courses, extracurricular activities, and community outreach programs I was able to truly find my passions. As I began my university degree at Dalhousie University, I found myself drawing parallels from what I was learning in my lectures to what I had mastered through the Hillfield curriculum. The transition from the Senior School to the first year of my undergrad was effortless as HSC had prepared me in such a phenomenal fashion.
I have found my academics challenging in a variety of different ways. I excel in more writing-based humanities classes. I have loved the variety of classes offered in this area from Sociology to Classical Civilizations. While these courses have not been easy, I have not found them incredibly challenging. I know the reading, research and writing skills I have gained will be useful in my future endeavours. I have also taken some STEM courses that I found harder. Even though I struggled in these courses, my teachers were often available for extra help to work through my struggles. I think the biggest challenge I have faced is finding balance in my Grade 12 year. Between duties as a Prefect (student leader), heavy course loads, and applying for universities it has been hard to excel at everything. This has taught me how to prioritize what is important as well as how to make the most out of my day. I am sure the life skills I have gained from this time management will serve me well later in life.

Teachers are supportive and help students meet their expectations.

Comments from students suggest that while the academic workload can be heavy, Hillfield Strathallan College teachers are highly supportive and have clear goals to ensure students understand expectations and succeed.

I feel that the academic program at HSC is quite rigorous. But there is a lot of support for students who may be struggling. There is a strong expectation that students continue to go on to secondary education. The school holds several University fairs each year and invites both students and parents to attend. Parents ask each other which university their child/children have applied to. We support each other with information about application requirements and submissions, deadlines, etc. There are four school counsellors in the Senior school that get to know each student and help them find their strengths and weaknesses. They assist with the university application process. I believe the school must follow the Ontario school curriculum so there are some key subjects that are not being taught or focused on. For example, in grade 9, my older daughter had a math unit on finances and money but it was the last unit of the year and they ran out of time. The unit was not taught.
I think teachers sometimes ask too much of students but never to an extreme. Often the case is there is not too much from one particular class but the combined heavy workload from multiple classes can add up. They are often accommodating if extra time is needed to catch up. In terms of expectations, teachers are usually specific with the learning goals and rubrics for assignments. If it is unclear, they are always willing to explain it again. The rubrics provide criteria for what has not met expectations, what meets expectations, and what exceeds expectations. I find this helpful when I am working on assignments. I think the teachers' main goal is to prepare us for post-secondary, especially in later grades. Our assignments are based on this goal.
