We have adopted a pure Singapore Math curriculum because Ontario’s standards don’t fully prepare students for success and lack structure. Our blended focus fosters deep conceptual understanding, structure, and critical thinking, all of which are essential for higher-level math. We recognized that the Ontario curriculum often lacks the rigor necessary for students to be competitive, so our goal is to ensure that by Grade 9, our students are on par with international math learners. At InnovOak, we teach math as a language through our "Speak Math" approach. This method encourages students to articulate their mathematical thinking clearly and confidently, treating math as a language to be mastered. By "Speaking Math", students gain a stronger understanding of the subject, improving both fluency and comprehension. This holistic approach not only prepares students for success in math but also keeps their post-secondary pathways open beyond Grade 11, where many typically struggle.
Textbooks and supplementary materials:
In PreK to Grade 8 we use Dimensions as our primary book. Teachers in Senior School are bound by AP and the OSSD, and will chose materials from the Trillium list that are current and are focused on university preparations.
Calculator policy:
At InnovOak, calculators are tools for advanced math, but students must develop fluency in basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) through daily homework. Calculators may be used for complex problems, but assessments will ensure students can perform basic operations without assistance to build strong math fundamentals.

In preschool, we focus on pre-reading skills, and as students move into early JK, we begin whole group reading lessons. We use Heggerty, UFLI, and Scarborough’s Reading Rope creating a structured approach to reading instruction, focusing on all critical components: phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. Through a combination of focused instruction, small group work, and individual coaching, we ensure students not only recognize letters and sounds but also learn to read for meaning. While we do not offer in-house programs for specialized support services such as social work, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP), we fully support external providers coming into the school during the school day to deliver these programs. We believe that facilitating access to these services, identified by parents as essential, ensures the best outcomes for students and their families. By allowing these services to be provided on-site, we make it easier for students to benefit from them, increasing the likelihood of program success. We have established connections with professionals in the fields of social work, OT, PT, and SLP, and can refer parents to trusted partners when needed. Additionally, we can recommend counselors and social workers when appropriate, offering families a network of support to ensure their child's educational and developmental success.

At InnovOak, we do not actively seek students who require an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). However, if challenges arise, we leverage our special education expertise, Student Success model, and staff skills to create learning plans and IEPs tailored to the student’s needs. We work closely with families to ensure effective support is provided. If needs evolve, we collaborate with parents to discuss future academic goals and potential pathways, including whether a different setting may be more suitable. We also explore creative options, such as adding resource support or staff capacity. If helpful, we may consider the use of Educational Assistants or tutors, with these services provided by the school but funded in addition to tuition.

Gifted and bright learners are programmed for by focusing on building depth of learning in their gifted areas, while also ensuring they receive support in areas that may need more development. Our goal is to challenge the areas that come easily, while fostering growth in those that do not, ensuring a well-rounded education. We aim to manage the brightness of gifted learners, preventing boredom or frustration, and promoting continuous engagement and development across all subjects.

Extracurricular Activities
While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a well-rounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts, or clubs. Involvement in extracurriculars helps stimulate students in their studies, makes them more motivated to learn, and can make school more enjoyable and fulfilling. Extracurricular activities can also provide students with a much-needed break from the stresses of academics, while helping them to develop skills and allowing them to take part in valuable social situations.
