Grade 12 Reclaimed Ash Bench Donated to Richmond Hill Community Centre

Toronto Waldorf School received a generous donation of ash wood from Sawmill Sid through a connection with alumni parent, Kathy Yamashita, in the summer. The wood came from trees in the Town of Richmond Hill that had to be felled after being killed by the emerald ash borer.

Earlier in October, students in the Grade 12 class worked on creating benches for the school as an applied project in the senior Philosophy course. Studies in the Grade 12 year aim at synthesizing various points of view and even overcoming a limited subject-object perspective by becoming part of the creative process where subject and object are united in the creative act. The class broke up into groups and designed and made benches using the donated wood.

The act of giving back to the community is an invaluable part of the senior year of high school and it is through community service projects that the students can experience the positive impact that they can have on the world around them. Both the Town of Richmond Hill and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) sent in a film crew and a photographer to record the students working on the benches.
