"A Montessori school should be able to offer a proper Montessori education, and by being accredited, it reassures parents that their child is receiving just that. The size of the school matters as well and with up to 300 students, you feel a greater sense of community. In addition, families with two or more children, are able to bring all of them to our school as we serve from toddler to junior high. The facility also includes a gym, pool, specialty rooms for art, music, french and computers."
3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

"One of the tradeoffs is focusing on purchasing proper materials used in a Montessori environment and not settling for simplified versions that may hinder their learning. We strive to provide a complete curriculum instead of a partial curriculum as we believe each student should have the opportunity to explore and experience more. Another tradeoff is offering an in-house swim program as opposed to going to a remote location. Students have swimming lessons as part of their physical education program. This allows our own staff to oversee each student's progress and assess their skill level appropriately."
4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

"The biggest milestone would be the sense of community and culture that has evolved over time. As a school of over 25 years, we have seen 18 month old children grow up to be leaders in their chosen career. Many past families have reached out to us about how their child felt at home and how the staff were all welcoming and supportive throughout their school years. We have received many referrals from parents and even had parents return with another child. This loyalty and support from both sides is great motivation for our school to continue the way it is. The school boasts up to 300 students ranging in age from 18 mos. to 12 years of age."
5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

"In short, every young soul has a sense of curiosity and a zeal for learning. Their minds are like sponges at a young age and so it is imperative to teach them as many things as possible. This is the strong foundation they require before they reach their elementary years. We understand that not all students learn the same pace or have the same skill in each subject area so it is critical for teachers to identify their learning style, strengths and weaknesses so they can go always go forward."
6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?
"One of the biggest concerns is attention to each student. Teachers are ensuring each child receives the attention needed to keep them aligned with the rest of the students. As a...(more)
"One of the biggest concerns is attention to each student. Teachers are ensuring each child receives the attention needed to keep them aligned with the rest of the students. As a mixed-aged program, there is a lot of mentoring going on in class with the older students and the younger students tend to observe or mimic the actions of their older classmates. This relation is ongoing throughout their 3 years in the same class. When teachers have to focus more on one or two individuals that need constant attention, it is detrimental to the class environment and impacts the learning of others."
7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

"Northstar Montessori has grown from 2 classrooms to 15classrooms over the last 25 years. It is one of the largest Montessori schools in Mississauga and is accredited by the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators, also known as CCMA. Our philosophy in education is to provide unlimited experiences so children are more adept in their daily lives and eventually contribute to society. New families enroll at our school mainly because of word of mouth and the ages we are able to accommodate."
8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

"The school is complete for a growing family. We cater from 18mos. to age 12 so parents with more than one child can come to our school. We have 15 classrooms, specialty rooms for art, music, computers and French, and a large gym, play area and swimming pool. We have in-house catering and provide after school swim lessons. We also offer after-school programs like chess, soccer, ping pong, baking, crafts and so on. What's great about it is that parents are at peace when they drop off their child, knowing they are in good hands at Northstar."

"When parents visit our school, they are usually surprised by the educational materials used by students. Parents wonder why it differs from other child care centres. The simple answer is this, the materials used were tried and tested and later developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago based on careful observations she made with children at each stage of their life. These sensory-engaging materials, experiences and the philosophy of following the child are the hallmark of Montessori!"
10. What might families find surprising about your school?

"The most surprising feature about our school is our all-season indoor pool. This is part of the physical education program and students ages 3 1/2 to 12yrs are provided swim lessons. Another feature our school has is a climbing wall. Overcoming the fear of heights is challenging but when taught with other same-aged students, the fear is minimized and the student will most likely take part in it. We also have a low staff turnover ratio, providing your child consistency throughout their education."

"Northstar has been making changes almost every year to show our commitment to growth and the well-being of our school community. Our most recent change is converting most of our play area to artificial turf. This allows for a safer area to play on as grass tends to be uneven and unusable after a day of rain. This includes all play structures and the soccer field. Another major improvement is the addition of a passenger lift. We felt that having access to our 2nd floor should not be restricted to those that require it."
12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

"As the world continues to change, we need to adapt to these changes and ensure the students are equipped to handle these challenges. The Montessori philosophy has been around for over 100 years and it is vital for our school to identify what changes need to be made to keep our school program in line with society."
