The big picture on Ontario Virtual School

We summarized the school ourselves

Since it was founded in 2010, it has grown to an annual student population of 3000, easily dwarfing the largest brick-and-mortar private schools in Canada by a third and more. The student body is comprised of nationals, in addition to those in Canada, in more than 15 countries. The teaching staff of 25, all Canadian certified, and the school is accredited in Ontario, able to confer the OSSD. In all, this isn’t a new or developing concept, but rather one that reflects a growing need. OVS students register for a much broader range of reasons, all of which signal the diversity of needs that OVS is serving. This includes students who are seeking to fill out a few courses in addition to their current school work, those striving to upgrade existing marks, and those who are scheduling around other commitments, from elite athletics to time spent in medical care. For overseas students, it’s an opportunity to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and therefore apply to Canadian universities, without incurring the costs the cost of boarding and travel. The delivery may be different than many are used to, but the teaching is strong, with a range of supports to ensure learner success. As such, OVS offers a valuable option to a growing number of students, in Canada and around the world.

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Ontario Virtual School is an accredited online high school operating since 2010. We provide over 170 high school courses leading to the Ontario Secondary School diploma. Our students can register at any time and can complete a course in as little as 4 weeks. This allows for students to develop their own pace and schedule. All learning materials and textbooks are included in the course fees."

Gr. 12 — My overall experience at Ontario Virtual School (OVS) was incredibly positive, and I would confidently rate it five stars. What stands out most in my mind is the flexibility and support that OVS offers. This truly sets it apart from traditional in-person schools. As someone who had to balance academics with personal health challenges and travel between provinces, the ability to work at my own pace made a huge difference in my success. The platform is user-friendly and well-organized. Each course is easy to follow, with clear instructions and expectations. I always knew where I stood in terms of progress. The teachers were responsive and respectful. One thing I appreciated most was how quickly they replied to emails or marked assignments, especially when I had tight deadlines or urgent concerns. Their professionalism made me feel supported rather than overwhelmed. What I liked best about OVS was the independence it gave me without lowering the academic standards. I developed stronger time management, research, and writing skills. I also gained confidence in using online tools, which I know will be helpful in both university and the workplace. Overall, I absolutely feel that OVS prepared me well for my next steps in life. I developed self-discipline, accountability, and critical thinking skills. Gr. 12 (current) — My experience at OVS was amazing. The teacher was really nice, and they taught me a lot. The school and teacher emailed back fast and helped with the work. They were very quick to get back to me and post my marks into OUAC. My grades were amazing, and I would recommend OVS to others. If you are looking for a school that is at your own pace and speed, this is the school for you. The process of enrolling in this school was super easy and efficient, and the workload was perfect for me. The lessons were also super helpful, and anytime I needed to go back to look at them, it was super easy to find. Online, the navigation was very organized and easy to use. I would definitely recommend it.

Gr. 12 (current) — I loved Ontario Virtual School. I really appreciated how I was able to work on it at any time. I’m a busy person, and the flexibility that OVS offers was perfect for me. Just from the one class I took at OVS, I wouldn’t change a thing about the school. One thing I do wish I had known before taking an OVS course is how accommodating it is; everything is really based on what you're comfortable with as a student. If I could change one thing about my day school, I would say it’s the lack of personalized accommodations. Students should be taught in the way they learn best, instead of everyone being taught the same way. Overall, I had a great experience at Ontario Virtual School, and I think it’s a great choice for anyone who might be struggling with traditional school courses.

Gr. 11 (current) — Ontario Virtual School has been a fantastic experience for me. I felt supported and confident in my learning throughout the course. I especially appreciated how easy it was to communicate with my teacher—she always responded quickly and provided valuable feedback. One feature I found extremely helpful was being able to submit assignments for review before final submission, which allowed me to improve my work and consistently achieve high-quality results. I earned a 97% in my Grade 12 Health and Nutrition course and genuinely enjoyed the material, even with my previous background in nutrition. One thing I wish I had known before enrolling is how independent-paced the learning really is—this can be great, but you do need to stay motivated. If I could change one thing, it might be adding optional live sessions or webinars for those who enjoy interactive learning.

Gr. 12 (current) — Ontario Virtual School was the best choice I had ever made. They made it so easy for me to sign up and send my grades to OUAC and to my day school. The class I took was HFA4U, and the teacher was super nice, very quick to respond to all of my questions and concerns. The workload was just right because they knew I had to balance this with four other classes. The projects were also a lot of fun because they helped me express myself creatively and not just follow a set of rules and instructions. Overall, the teachers are really great, and the way the lessons are taught makes everything really clear. I would highly recommend OVS to anyone who needs extra credit or grade.

Gr. 12 (current) — Ontario Virtual School is a good place to learn because it is flexible and lets me study from home. I kind of love it because I can work at my own pace and choose when to do my schoolwork. The teachers are helpful and answer questions quickly, which makes learning easier. Gr. 12 (current) — I really enjoyed my Calculus course at OVS. I was able to learn all the concepts effectively and progress at my own pace, which helped me develop a clear and thorough understanding of the topics. I especially appreciated the one-on-one tutoring option, which allowed me to ask questions directly to my teacher. It helped clear up any doubts and ensured I had no misconceptions. I also loved how organized the course was, from the lessons to the tests, everything was laid out clearly. The Resources tab was very helpful, and the assignments deepened my understanding through visual learning. I experienced no technical issues or lag on the website, and my teacher was always responsive and supportive. Gr. 11 (current) — I took the Grade 11 online French course through OVS and really appreciated how flexible it was. I chose this course because I was enrolled in a program at another school, and French Immersion was only offered during the semester I was away. OVS turned out to be a great solution—it gives you a full year to complete the course, so there’s no pressure, and you can truly work at your own pace. As a daytime student, it fit well with my schedule. If I had a busy week, I didn’t have to stress about French and could come back to it when I had more time. Even though the course was online, I never felt completely on my own. There were discussion activities with classmates, which added a nice element of interaction. I also appreciated how structured and easy to navigate the course was. I went into OVS not knowing much about how it worked, only that it was online, but I was pleasantly surprised by how efficient and well-organized everything was.

Gr. 11 (current) — Overall, my experience with the Ontario Virtual School (OVS) has been very positive. The best part about OVS is the flexibility. OVS allows me to work on my own time and at my own pace. When I'm comfortable moving forward, I can speed up. When I'm struggling with something, I can slow down and take my time without being pressured to move faster. This creates a healthy engagement with students, facilitating learning for those who are busy—like athletes similar to myself—to engage and move forward in a way that feels healthiest for us. Something I wish I knew before is how independent it is. This is both the best part and the most challenging aspect, as it requires a level of self-motivation and discipline to ensure proper engagement. One thing I would change about OVS would be to have a little more structure or optional live check-in opportunities for those who need a little bit more guidance. However, the independence and flexibility of OVS truly allow for a wonderful, personalized learning experience.

Gr. 12 (current) — I have loved the Ontario Virtual School student experience. I have always been able to ask the teacher questions, and they have sent me an email within 1–2 days. I have also liked the layout of the website, as it was very easy to use. There does not seem to be anything that I would want to change because this school is AMAZING! A lot of my friends have also been attending this school because our day school is not the best at teaching, and it has been a wonderful experience for them as well. I feel like Ontario Virtual School is a better school than my actual day school. For example, I actually feel accepted, and I do not feel nervous or scared whenever I ask any questions. OVS has inspired me to become a better learner, and this OVS experience has been EXCELLENT! My mark was also in the high 90s, and because of this, I was able to get into my dream university—Waterloo!

Gr. 12 — My experience at Ontario Virtual School was very positive. I took Grade 12 Calculus with Miss Hargraves, and what stood out most was how organized and accessible everything was. The lessons were clearly explained, and the platform made it easy to track my progress. Gr. 12 (current) — I loved OVS, in my personal opinion. I enjoyed the fact that I was able to learn and complete this course at my own pace, regardless of the other courses I had in school. Because of this course, I was able to personally learn and grow in skills such as time management, as I had to figure out my own schedule for it. Additionally, I believe that for this reason, I was able to do better in my other courses since I had the freedom to focus on and plan my education, rather than having someone else who might not take my struggles at home and in school into consideration. Furthermore, I liked that I could rewatch my lessons and use them as a review, unlike in school, where you see the lesson once and it’s gone. Alongside that, I appreciated that they had a very hands-on success team, ensuring that students keep track of their education.

Gr. 12 (current) — I loved being a student with Ontario Virtual School. The school was perfect in terms of pacing, teaching, marking, and more. Their website is very easy to use and ensures the user is familiar with all available resources through a fabulous orientation. I wish I had known just how many helpful resources were available in OVS. There are plenty of ways to receive help, whether it's through the teacher, the counsellors, tech support, or many more. OVS ensures that all work, such as tests or assignments, is marked within 48 hours! This has helped me immensely as I was provided feedback almost immediately and was able to continue learning at my desired pace and not feel rushed at all. Furthermore, the freedom to learn at my own pace helped me retain information much better than in regular day school.

Gr. 12 (current) — I took Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors through OVS, and I had a great experience. The registration was quick and easy, so I got started right away. I enjoyed working at my own pace. The lessons were easy to follow, and the website itself is easy to use. I liked that I could slow down and go back a few lessons on units I'm not yet fully confident in. This means that I could also move ahead when I felt they were easy for me. This flexibility lets me manage my day school along with other extracurricular activities. I don't feel as stressed because I have more than enough time to finish the tests. Overall, I felt like I could learn at my own pace without feeling overwhelmed.

Gr. 12 (current) — What I love most about OVS (Ontario Virtual School) is the freedom and flexibility that it affords. I can easily go at my own pace, doing units fairly quickly, while still retaining the content required to be successful on unit tests, and deepening my understanding of topics as a whole. The structure is fairly straightforward: watch the lessons, complete the work, and complete the accompanying unit test. I found it to be a rather seamless experience. One thing I wish I knew is how much self-discipline it takes, but luckily, they so check up on you if you haven't touched any of the work in a while. It taught me valuable accountability, and overall, the whole experience was genuinely enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend it to other students.

Gr. 12 (current) — Ontario Virtual School was a great experience for me as a student. I turned to OVS after frustration with my day school calculus teacher. I loved the flexibility of the course, but I was still encouraged to complete it on a regular basis by the nature of the website. In such a stressful and important year, such as grade 12, I felt supported by OVS, and the grade I received helped me get into my top choice of a university program (Western Ivey). Whenever I reached out to my teacher, she was quick to respond. She was also quick to mark tests, usually it took one day, which is great compared to my day school, where it takes over a week. Another aspect I liked was how my current mark was always visible to me, so I always knew how I was doing overall in the course.

I found it simple to track my progress since I could clearly see which lessons I had already watched and which ones still needed my attention. In addition, OVS provided a custom online calendar that allowed me to schedule and organize my coursework in a way that worked best for me. This personalized calendar made it incredibly easy to stay on track and manage my time efficiently. I really appreciated the flexibility and control it gave me over my learning experience. It was refreshingly different from traditional school systems. There was no pressure, just a supportive structure that let me move at my own pace. Gr. 12 (current) — I liked everything about OVS; there is a lot of flexibility, and everything moves at your own pace! There was plenty of extra work available for each lesson, as well as at the end of each unit to practice. Additionally, there were questions within the lessons to further my understanding. I appreciated how each lesson could be restarted as many times as necessary, which was helpful when a lesson was more difficult to understand. It was easy to complete all evaluations. I also liked how there was ample time to submit each test. This gave me the chance to fully understand the material and answer to the best of my ability without worrying about time running out.

Gr. 12 — My experience at Ontario Virtual School was both flexible and enriching. One of the things that stands out most in my mind is the ability to learn at my own pace. The format allowed me to balance school with other personal and extracurricular commitments, which made a big difference in managing my time and staying motivated. What I liked best about Ontario Virtual School was the clear structure of the courses and how accessible the lessons were. The recorded video lectures and well-organized materials made it easy to revisit topics when needed, which really helped me absorb the content better. The teachers were also supportive and responded to questions quickly, which made the online experience feel more personal and connected. If I were to suggest one improvement, it would be to offer more opportunities for student interaction, such as optional live sessions or virtual group projects. While the independence was great, a bit more community could help students feel even more engaged. I do feel that Ontario Virtual School prepared me well for my next steps. Gr. 12 (current) — Ontario Virtual School (OVS) allowed me to study and take tests anywhere, anytime. The lessons were flexible, and so were the tests. I also liked the amount of resources provided, such as the practice questions at the end of the quizzes. The teacher I had was amazing—she responded to my emails very quickly and was really nice! OVS’s staff and admin also communicated very well with me. For example, when I asked them to add my midterm mark to OUAC, they responded within 24 hours. My teacher also replied within 24 hours. The lessons and labs were easy to follow and not too long. The time given for tests and exams was reasonable, which I liked because it allowed me to build my skills. Overall, I had a very good experience.

Gr. 11 — I’m Abigail, and my experience with Ontario Virtual School was fantastic. I took their online course in Human Growth and Development (HHG4M), which was expertly laid out and allowed me to learn a lot. The instructor always responded quickly whenever I had questions and was very prompt with marking. One of my favourite parts of the system was the layout of the online courses; everything was easy to manage, and the ‘course points’ feature kept me motivated throughout. I especially loved the challenge option, where you can challenge another student to a quiz on the course content. It really helped me prepare for the exam. The practice tests and exams were extremely helpful and did a great job of preparing me for the real thing. I have ADHD and Autism, and my day school teachers were not accommodating my needs or supporting my IEP. By attending OVS, I was able to take responsibility for my learning and work at my own pace. This meant I could watch lessons late at night or on weekends and rewatch them if I didn’t understand something. I could print the slides for review and highlight important information—there was no need to take notes in a traditional way. This approach helped me stay focused and on track. If you’re not self-disciplined, it’s easy to fall behind. Gr. 12 — What I enjoyed most about taking a course at OVS was the degree to which there was a balance of independent learning with having dependable help when I needed it, especially when I had a lot going on with a busy schedule of other classes and extracurriculars. I enrolled in OVS while attending my day school because I appreciated that I was able to take a course not offered at my day school, such as kinesiology, and OVS made this easy. The instructors were fantastic — they were always quick to respond to my queries and provided very useful feedback on my assignments. I was never left waiting or unsure of anything. I was graded quickly within the next 24-48 hours, keeping me encouraged to continue. I utilized the homework books and the online resource packs — both were a huge help with studying for the final exam and learning important concepts. The website was very user-friendly as well, and that made the entire experience hassle-free. Something that would make the experience even more effective is to have an option to simply view the slideshow content without going through the entire written module. At times I just needed a quick rundown or visual overview of the key ideas and having the ability to navigate the slides separately would have made studying more efficient and quick. That being said, it didn’t detract at all from just how efficient the overall experience was. The student success staff were also very helpful whenever there were questions I had regarding deadlines. Additionally, the student success staff was well organized and timely, especially regarding sending the final grades to OUAC, and it was completed without any complications. If you are seeking a flexible, reliable, and supportive means of earning credit, I 100% suggest OVS. It is professional, organized, and ideally suited to independent students who want help when help is needed.

Even my exams were marked in less than 12 hours! My favourite part about OVS is how easy it is to sign in and access my coursework. Furthermore, I love how it tells you how far into the course you are and how many days are left to complete the course. Though Ontario Virtual School is an online school it is very well structured. The school itself has lots of different courses for students from 9-12. I did a grade 12 International  Business course and I really enjoyed it. I found the course material to be engaging, with lots of different techniques to help me learn the material such as slideshows, videos, and textbook reading. There were also lots of assessments in different formats that were really fun and interesting. There were assignments that were quite different from each other and they really made me use my resources, for we needed to make a crossword for the unit and in another one we tracked a cargo ship. There were also some forum questions in which you would answer a specific question and then chat with your peers about the different responses making it feel like a real school. There was great communication between the teacher and I. I had some technical difficulties when trying to submit some of my assignments but the teacher was very understanding and helped me with a workaround. Overall I would definitely recommend this course and the school to anyone who wishes to further their education.

Ontario Virtual School has been an amazing experience. There is not one thing that I would change about it. I was so used to traditional schooling however, when I started at OVS I encountered helpful and supportive teachers, an easily approachable system and staff, and work that was at the right level where it challenged me but made me successful. Everything on OVS is easy- from accessing your work to asking help if anything goes wrong. The structure of the work is great. One thing I wish I knew about the school is the teachers require 24 hours to email you back and 48 hours for work to be marked however my teacher was quicker than that.

My experience at OVS was relatively great. The flexibility with how students could learn the course content whenever they pleased was a feature that I found greatly beneficial. Being in complete control of your own learning would offer intrinsic motivation for students and as a result, they would be more motivated to learn the content better. The only thing about OVS that I would change is to increase the number of practice problems available, so students could be better prepared for the individual tests. OVS did indeed prepare me for my life's next steps, I'm still using the knowledge I gained from the course within my university courses. Students should expect to receive a mark that reflects the amount effort they put within the course. People have the wrong perception about online schools, they are in no way easier than classes in school, its the same curriculum and content, so a future student should take it seriously.

Taking courses online helped a lot because I was able to work at my own pace. I took English online and I had a much better experience with OVS than I did with my high school. Since I was able to work on my own pace I was able to dedicate more time to specific things. I was able to work during winter and spring break, and really get a lot of things done. I highly recommend OVS to any seniors looking to ease their workload. This also provides the added benefit of having more time to participate in extracurricular activities.

Ontario Virtual School has provided me with a very valuable learning experience. The best thing about OVS is the amount of content and material provided for self-study. The course is done online entirely so clear material is something very important for students. As a student, you often get stuck on a few things, but I was VERY pleased with quick responses from the teachers who often were willing to explain things from scratch. If there is one thing students need to keep in mind is that self-motivation is necessary when it comes to any online course. With that being said, with the efforts of both the student and teacher, it will be a very pleasant experience for sure.

Ontario virtual school provided me with one of the best experiences. They cared about my marks and helping me in all the ways that they could. I was on a time limit to finish the course and they helped me in many ways to ensure that i would still do well in the course and getting it done during the short time period. They went out of their way to help and i appreciated it a lot. I was so happy i chose this school as my experience was one of the best I've ever had. I still to this day use what i learned in the course on an everyday basis. And the way the teachers helped me and went out of there way to ensure i would be alright after i was done the course was absolutely amazing.
