Breakdown
Overall Experience 5
My experience at Ontario Virtual School (OVS) was very positive overall. What stood out to me most was the flexibility it offered. As a student balancing multiple responsibilities, being able to learn at my own pace and complete assignments on my own schedule was a game-changer. I especially appreciated how the course materials were well-organized and easy to follow. The platform was user-friendly, and help was available when needed. If I could change one thing, it would be to offer more interactive opportunities for student engagement, such as virtual study groups or discussions. OVS helped me become a more independent learner and better manage my time, which definitely prepared me for university. Prospective students should expect a self-directed learning environment, but with plenty of support and clear expectations. If you are motivated and disciplined, this school can be a great option.
School Leadership 5
The school leadership at Ontario Virtual School seemed professional and responsive. I didn’t have many direct interactions with the administration, but whenever I or my family had questions, we received timely and helpful replies. The administration respected students and treated inquiries seriously. They seemed organized and committed to ensuring that students had the support they needed to succeed. The school fostered a respectful atmosphere, and it felt like the leadership genuinely cared about students’ progress. Communication with parents was also consistent and informative.
Teaching 5
The teaching at Ontario Virtual School was strong and exceeded my expectations. The teachers were knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their subjects. The video lessons were well-produced, concise, and easy to understand. Although the learning was mostly asynchronous, teachers responded quickly to emails and provided detailed feedback on assignments. I felt respected as a student, and it was clear that the teachers wanted us to succeed. One of my teachers went out of their way to provide extra resources when I was struggling with a concept, which I really appreciated. The formal tone between teachers and students helped maintain a professional learning environment. The quality of instruction and the feedback I received definitely helped me stay motivated and encouraged me to aim higher in my studies.
Academics 5
The academic program at Ontario Virtual School is rigorous but manageable. It promotes independence, time management, and self-motivation. Courses are well-structured with clear expectations, and students are given the flexibility to work at their own pace, which reduces stress while still encouraging progress. I found that the workload was balanced, and there were enough assessments to track my understanding without feeling overwhelmed. The academic culture isn’t competitive in the traditional sense, but rather focused on personal growth. Students who are disciplined can thrive in this environment. The online format prepared me for university by helping me learn how to study independently and take ownership of my learning. I feel confident in my academic abilities because of the training I received at OVS. Prospective students should be ready to stay organized and proactive.
School Life 4.5
Student life at Ontario Virtual School is different from a traditional school because it’s entirely online. While you miss out on in-person social events and extracurriculars, the school does a great job of making the learning experience enjoyable and engaging. Because of the flexibility, I had a better quality of life overall—I could plan my days in a way that worked for me and avoid burnout. Most students seemed content, especially those who chose OVS for its flexibility. The lack of social interaction might be a downside for some, but for focused, independent learners, it’s a great fit. OVS could improve by offering optional online clubs or virtual events to foster a stronger sense of community. Overall, I felt happy and productive while attending.
Admissions 5
The admissions process at Ontario Virtual School was straightforward and stress-free. The website provided clear instructions on how to register and choose courses. I appreciated that I could start learning almost immediately after enrolling. The staff was helpful when I had questions, and it felt like they genuinely wanted to make the process smooth. My advice for new applicants would be to double-check course prerequisites and be ready to take initiative. OVS is ideal for self-motivated students who are comfortable learning independently.
University placement and counselling 4.5
Ontario Virtual School provides helpful support when it comes to university applications. They sent out reminders about deadlines for OUAC and offered guidance on how to submit final marks. My teachers submitted grades on time, and the school sent transcripts directly to universities. While the support was solid, I think the counselling services could be more personalized. For example, having virtual one-on-one counselling sessions or more tailored advice for students aiming for competitive programs would be a great addition. That said, I still felt supported enough to navigate the process successfully. The academic preparation and the self-discipline I developed through OVS gave me the confidence I needed to apply to my top-choice programs. Prospective students should feel reassured that OVS takes university preparation seriously, even if some of the support is more hands-off compared to in-person schools.
