(5) Student Experience
Studying with Ontario Virtual School was a very positive experience. I was enrolled in their Calculus and Vectors course and found that the lessons, homework, and practice tests prepared me well for assessments and gave me a strong understanding of the content. My teacher was very responsive and took great care in providing comments on my tests to help me improve. Taking this course online was important to me due to negative experiences with math at my home school, where teachers often couldn’t answer questions when there was confusion, and where the tests didn’t reflect the material or level of difficulty taught in class. Since this course will be part of my studies next year, I didn’t want to leave with only a vague understanding of the material. I’m grateful that OVS helped me build confidence in both my knowledge and abilities.
(5) School Leadership
The teachers at Ontario Virtual School are excellent. In my experience, they were responsive and very prompt with marking, often returning tests the same day or the next. The feedback I received on my tests was thoughtful and helped me identify areas to focus on, which improved how I studied for the exam. While I can’t speak to interactions with guidance or administration, my experience with the teaching staff was entirely positive.
(5) Teaching
I think the teachers' expectations of us are very reasonable. They push us to challenge ourselves and strive to do our best, while also understanding that perfection isn't something we should demand of ourselves. Going into every test, I knew what would be important and what kinds of questions might appear. I understood the expectations in terms of both the type and format of answers. From my teacher’s comments, I could tell she recognized how hard I was working and what I could achieve if I focused on my areas of difficulty. I really took her feedback into account as I prepared for my final exam. Overall, I was very pleased with the teaching.
(5) Academics
I found the work to be at a very good level—challenging enough to reasonably prepare me for university, but not so difficult that it consumed all of my time. When comparing my learning and test content with that of students at my home school, I found that while our understanding of the material was similar, my tests were much more aligned with the difficulty level of what I had studied. In contrast, their tests were often far more difficult than anything practiced in class. For this reason, I believe the coursework was very well balanced. Next year, I’ll be taking Calculus as part of my degree, and I believe this course has prepared me well.
(5) School Life
Since this is a virtual school, giving a traditional tour would certainly be challenging, but if I were to give a tour of the virtual learning space, there are several key aspects I would highlight. First, I would show the resource section, where practice tests and their solutions are provided; these were essential for helping me prepare for assessments. I would also point out where the lessons are located and how they’re clearly organized to help students navigate and complete them in order. Another feature I really appreciated was the grade book page, where I could track which assessments I had completed and review the feedback I received.
(5) Admissions
From what I remember, the application process was very simple. It was just a matter of choosing the course I wanted to take, providing my information and details about my home school, submitting proof of my prerequisite, and then making the payment. After that, I received an email with my username and password, and I was able to start the course right away. Overall, the process was as seamless as I could have hoped for.
