(5) Student Experience
I took the Grade 11 online French course through OVS and really appreciated how flexible it was. I chose this course because I was enrolled in a program at another school, and French Immersion was only offered during the semester I was away. OVS turned out to be a great solution—it gives you a full year to complete the course, so there’s no pressure, and you can truly work at your own pace. As a daytime student, it fit well with my schedule. If I had a busy week, I didn’t have to stress about French and could come back to it when I had more time. Even though the course was online, I never felt completely on my own. There were discussion activities with classmates, which added a nice element of interaction. I also appreciated how structured and easy to navigate the course was. I went into OVS not knowing much about how it worked, only that it was online, but I was pleasantly surprised by how efficient and well-organized everything was.
(5) School Leadership
One thing I really appreciated was how easy it was to reach out to my teacher whenever I had questions or felt stuck on something. I was always encouraged to email for support, which made me feel well-supported throughout the course. Most of the time, I received responses within a few days, often even on the same day. Assignments were marked fairly quickly, and I always received helpful feedback that allowed me to improve on future work. The Student Success Team also sent regular emails to keep me updated on how much time I had left to complete the course, which I found really helpful and motivating.
(5) Teaching
I think my teacher asked just the right amount of me. The course was definitely a little challenging at times, but never to the point where I felt overwhelmed—it struck a really good balance. One area where I think OVS could improve is by more clearly defining what their idea of “success” looks like. I may have had a different understanding of success, so having clearer expectations could help students aim in the right direction. Overall, it was a really positive and supportive learning experience. This course challenged me in a good way by encouraging me to expand my vocabulary, improve my grammar, and communicate more confidently in another language. I always felt encouraged to do my best and continue growing academically.
(5) Academics
I think the work in this course was just right. It wasn’t too easy, which kept me engaged, but it also wasn’t so difficult that I felt lost. I definitely believe this course will be useful to me later in life, as being able to communicate in both of Canada’s official languages can open up more job opportunities and enhance my qualifications. Learning French has also strengthened my understanding of language structure and improved my overall communication skills. Even if I don’t use it every day, the ability to understand and speak French will always be an asset in many areas of my life. I’m really glad I took this course. It helped me improve my skills and boosted my confidence, which I believe will benefit me in the future.
