Provincial funding for private schools

British Columbia

Independent schools are categorized into four groups. Schools that fall into Group 1 or 2 have met certain criteria for facilities and curriculum that qualify them for provincial funding. Group 1 schools receive 50 percent of per-pupil operating costs of the local public school district, and Group 2 schools receive 35 per cent. Alberta

Accredited independent schools that meet standards of curriculum, instruction hours, evaluation processes and more, and employ certified teachers, are eligible for 60 percent of the per-pupil amount paid to public schools. For details, visit https://education.alberta.ca/parents/choice/private.aspx

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan provides partial funding for private schools. In order to receive 50 percent of the per-student average provincial funding, independent schools must meet certain criteria, including following the provincial curriculum and policies, employing only certified teachers, and taking part in student assessments and inspections. Manitoba

Independent schools that meet provincial curriculum standards and hire certified teachers are eligible for 50 percent of the per-pupil amount paid to local public schools. For more information, visit https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/schools/ind/

Quebec

Certified private schools that meet the standards of the provincial system are eligible for about 50 percent of the per-pupil amount paid to public schools. English language private schools in Quebec receive funding for high school students only, but they must abide by the province's French Language Charter under Bill 101. They do not receive subsidies for elementary students.
