What RSGC says about their university placement record and services:

  • Our Director of University Counselling works closely with each student to help them find the best fit for their post-secondary options. Close to 50 universities from around the world visit RSGC each year to meet with students individually or in small groups. Annually, 80-85% of our graduates are accepted to the university and program of their first choice. Our rigorous academic program prepares students for post-secondary success, no matter their chosen path. Our Alumni Association hosts several events every year to help students prepare for a successful transition to university. Each year a handful of graduates chooses to defer their university entrance to pursue a Gap Year - these students work closely with our Coordinator of Global Partnerships and Real World Connections to plan a productive and transformative year.

Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

Students succeed because of the rigorous and individualized academics.

Discussions with students and alumni emphasize the rigorous academic environment at Royal St. George's College, which includes personalized support and a wide range of Advanced Placement courses even within its small-school setting.

My interest was to go to Wharton business school, which is an Ivy League school, and highly competitive. I had spoken to the Royal St. George’s college advisor when I was in Grade 9, and he laid out a plan for me explaining what I needed to do.  So I took the most difficult classes I could take: I took seven or eight AP classes, one of which no one else signed up for. Instead of cancelling the class, the teacher was kind enough to teach it just for me. So I had that unique opportunity where Royal St. George’s College really cared about my objectives and enabled me to strive and attain them.
Sometimes, as a teenage boy, you may need a little bit of steering and guidance in the right direction. When I was going into my last year [at Royal St. George’s] in Grade 12, I was deciding between going into the AP Calculus class or the regular stream. I signed up for the regular stream and then, just before the start of the school year, one of my old math teachers — and he was my tennis coach also at RSGC, so I knew him quite well — he called my home phone and asked to speak to me and he said, ‘You should be in that AP class. You’re definitely strong enough, and it will benefit you in university.’ I put up a bit of resistance, but eventually followed his advice and took the class, and as he predicted, it helped me tremendously in university.
If the school was a person, another trait of the school would be intelligence, because the academic side of Royal St. George’s is very rigorous. It has a very diverse offering, especially considering that it’s a fairly small school. As a student, you have the opportunity to take various first-year university-level courses in high school, which is a tremendous opportunity for any student.

Holistic personal preparation gives students an advantage.

Sources from across the school community reveal that Royal St. George's College places a strong emphasis on building character and personal development alongside academic excellence, preparing students to thrive in university and beyond.

In terms of confidence, Royal St. George’s College gave me the environment that I needed to really flourish academically, socially and mentally. It was just the perfect atmosphere that allowed me to go into my university studies feeling very confident in myself and confident in the path that I was on going forward.
You come to appreciate just how special that environment is at Royal St. George’s College. Once you leave that environment and go into university — where you’re one of the thousands of students — it puts it into perspective, and it makes you very grateful that you had that experience and those opportunities when you were younger at Royal St. George’s.
My one piece of advice to future Royal St. George’s College students would be to go in with an open mind, be ready to challenge yourselves. … Maximize all of the great variety of opportunities that are available to you. When you leave that environment and go to university, if you have pushed yourself outside of your comfort zone and tried new things in those years, you’re going to notice the payback later on. You’re going to be a more confident, and a more well-rounded person.

The alumni network is a key source of support.

Observations from current students and alumni highlight the robust alumni network at Royal St. George's College, where former students actively mentor and guide current students in their university journey.

... every opportunity that I have had opened to me since graduating from the school — be it going to an Ivy League school, working in Silicon Valley, to travelling the world and studying in numerous different countries — all started at St. George’s. The school taught me to dream big and strive to reach my objectives, but also equipped me with the tools and skills to be able to reach those objectives.
It’s a small-school thing: there is such an esprit de corps about ‘being a Georgian’. With the alumni, there’s a hope to be able to give to the current students what was given to me. Especially with my young guys currently at university, there is always a great reach-back to the Grade 11s and 12s. Early in the Grade 12 year, we’ll have alumni who are currently at university come back to talk to current students, and we’ll do it in a room without adults so they can really talk about their experiences.

Students embark on diverse academic pathways.

Comments from students and alumni highlight that the extensive and diverse academic offerings at Royal St. George's College allow students to explore various interests, which aids them in making informed decisions about their future educational paths.

One reason [to choose Royal St. George’s] would be the academic side. The school offers very strong academics. There’s a variety of Advanced Placement courses to take. … I was more on the Business and Liberal Arts side of things, but there’s a really great Computer Science program that they have at the school, and I know many people who were involved in that, who loved it and who have gone on to have a lot of success in university because of that. So that’s another reason [to choose Royal St. George’s]: the school’s academics, and the breadth of opportunities that you have, especially for such a small-school environment.
Being able to see and try so many different things in my time at RSGC helped me choose my path a little bit better than maybe some of the people I know at university, who are still trying to figure out what they like.
I really enjoyed the ACES program, which is our computer engineering, computer hardware program. There's nothing really like it anywhere else. I really had fun with that. The skills I learned really transferred well over to my program in university, especially in the practical elements. I was a big fan of it. It's one of the reasons I chose Royal St. George's College. It was a big reason for me.
