  • Learning disabilities
    Dyslexia (Language-Based Learning Disability)
    This is a learning disability that can limit a child's ability to read and learn. It can have a variety of traits. A few of the main ones are impaired phonological awareness and decoding, problems with orthographic coding, and auditory short-term memory impairment.
    Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
    This is a sound differentiation disorder involving problems with reading, comprehension, and language.
    Dyscalculia
    This is a kind of specific learning disability in math. Kids with this math disorder have problems with calculation. They may also have problems with math-related concepts such as time and money.
    Dysgraphia
    This is a kind of specific learning disability in writing. It involves problems with handwriting, spelling, and organizing ideas.
    Language Processing Disorder
    This is characterized by having extreme difficulty understanding what is heard and expressing what one wants to say. These disorders affect the area of the brain that controls language processing.
    Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NLD)
    These involve difficulties interpreting non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language. They're usually characterized by a significant discrepancy between higher verbal skills and weaker motor, visual-spatial, and social skills.
    Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit
    A characteristic seen in people with learning disabilities such as Dysgraphia or Non-verbal LD. It can result in missing subtle differences in shapes or printed letters, losing place frequently, struggles with cutting, holding pencil too tightly, or poor eye/hand coordination.

    Autism
    Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).
    Asperger's Syndrome
    On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.
    Down syndrome
    his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.
    Intellectual disability
    This is a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning (e.g., reasoning, learning, and problem solving). Intellectual disabilities are also known as general learning disabilities (and used to be referred to as a kind of mental retardation).
    Williams syndrome
    This is a rare genetic disorder present at birth. It is characterized by intellectual disabilities or learning problems, unique facial features, and cardiovascular problems.
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. These may include growth deficits, facial anomalies, and damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to cognitive, behavioural, and other problems.
  • Behavioral and Emotional
    Troubled behaviour / troubled teens
    roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. This can lead to behavioural and emotional issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behaviour, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
    Clinical Depression
    This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life.
    Clinical anxiety
    This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror.
    Suicidal thoughts
    This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life.
    Drug and alcohol abuse
    This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning.
    Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
    This is a disruptive behavioural disorder which normally involves angry outbursts, often directed at people of authority. This behaviour must last continuously for six months or more and significantly interfere with daily functioning.

    Multiple sclerosis
    This is a condition of the central nervous system. It affects the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Symptoms can include fatigue, loss of motor control, memory loss, depression, and cognitive difficulties.
    Cerebral palsy
    his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.
    Muscular dystrophy
    Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals.
    Spina Bifida
    This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine.
    Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
    This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.
    Blindness
    Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness."
    Deafness
    Hearing impairment, also known as "hearing loss," is a partial or total inability to hear. The degree of hearing impairment varies between people. It can range from complete hearing loss (or deafness) to partial hearing loss (meaning the ears can pick up some sounds).
    Cystic Fibrosis

St. John’s-Kilmarnock School is a really academic environment. You're really encouraged to do the best you can and to push yourself in all of your classes. This is done in such a compassionate way. I never had a time where I asked for help and it didn't get returned in spades. Whether that was academic or even in my personal life.
I went into high-level chemistry in Grade 11 at St. John’s Kilmarnock School. Of course, it was a challenge, but I found after a couple of months when I was actually being challenged and forced to put the effort in and learn, I was actually doing way better in the course than I had been at standard level. I was learning a lot more, not only academically but also about myself and about the strategies that helped me succeed. I think the real learning I had during my time at SJK was that if you want to be successful, you really need to push yourself and challenge yourself, and not just take the easy path through life, because those are never going to help you grow.
I don't know how much SJK influenced my area of study at university. Maybe a bit. That was more personal interest and family influence. SJK definitely did influence the choice of university because SJK is a university preparatory school. So pretty much everyone goes to college or university after they graduate. A lot of students go to Western, Queens, and McGill, and some go west, but those are the really big ones.

There's a focus on holistic development and support.

The focus isn't on academics entirely. What I love, and what I think is surprising, is that St. John’s-Kilmarnock School would much rather that students be a well-rounded person than someone who is strictly focused on academics and excels only in that area. There's a lot of support.
On the one hand, [academics are] absolutely a part of who we are, but it's not the only thing that we are. We really encourage our students to be very well rounded. So while academics take priority here, so do sports and healthy, active living, and we have a really strong arts program, too. We really challenge our students to reach their potential and develop all facets of themselves, while still keeping in mind the importance of their academics and of course, the success that comes from those academics and the opportunities that those academics afford.
You can miss a day of class and your teachers at St. John’s-Kilmarnock School will help you make up for it. They really want to see you develop yourself, not only on the academic side, but also in your communication skills. Teamwork, leadership, and those kinds of things are just as valued as the academic side. I think it also helps take the pressure off students because you know that you're not only there to get the best grades or to pass all your tests; you know that you're getting more out of the experience and that that's preferred. Then at the same time, if all you want to do is focus on your academics, that's okay, and you'll be supported no matter what.

The teachers are dedicated and provide individualized support.

We've got a really great learning support program. Sometimes we have students that come to us with particular learning challenges, but we do feel that we're really able to support that as long as the student is motivated. And I think that that's what it comes down to is that you can succeed here, provided that you've got the motivation and provided that your parents are willing to support you with your academic goals.
The teachers that I had really cared and wanted their kids to do well. Their goal is to make you succeed and that's their priority. You can tell that they want you to do well—they treat you as their own kids. I think that the teachers there really want to be there and enjoy working with students who are all motivated.
I most appreciated the care and dedication from the teachers at St. John’s-Kilmarnock School, which is something that's unrivalled at any other school or place I've ever been. Really how much they want you to succeed, and what they will do to help you succeed is something that's really unique.

There's a close-knit community and small classes.

The things I appreciated the most about St. John’s-Kilmarnock became that close-knit community and how small the class sizes were. When I got to high school, I realized how much of a benefit it was for me educationally to have a small class. I had more opportunities to learn and be involved with the learning and also just to get really close.
Everyone relates very well to each other because they're all so close because of the small classes. You get to know the people that you're with every day so well and you can relate with your classmates about all the classes you're in because you're pretty much in all the same classes until Grade 10 or 11. Then you get a little bit more choice. Every student is well rounded, I would say, and that's something they can relate to.
From what I've heard from my parents, what they really liked about the school was that educational aspect. SJK offers really good education. In my opinion, and in my parents opinion, they have really excellent teachers. And another aspect that I think goes along with that is that it's quite a small school and a very close-knit community, and we got to know our teachers very well because of that. You can get unlimited access to your teacher for help and you build a connection with them because there are such small class sizes. You become so close with your classmates and it really gives you the opportunity to excel.

Whether that be academically or with extracurriculars, I think it shows up in all aspects of SJK. Anyone who's been to SJK can't deny the unbelievable school spirit we have, whether it be through our house competitions or the incredible sports teams that we always cheer on. In general, the school has an unbelievable spirit to it that has been unrivalled even in my post-secondary education.
The piece of advice I would give to a new student would be to get involved. You're going to have to get involved to some extent because there's obviously requirements to graduate for both the OSSD and your IB diploma. You have to fulfill some extracurricular requirements, but if you do it because you want to, you're going to get a lot out of it. So get involved in anything you can as much as you can.
I think everyone was fairly hard working and they wanted to succeed at things. The school was able to offer things that everyone could succeed in, whether it was athletics or academics or different kinds of clubs. There's a lot of variety for how small it was. I think people who wanted to succeed could find things at SJK that could make them succeed. I also think it's a very fun place. People wanted to work hard, but they also wanted to have fun. I think students who were motivated and wanted to do well did well. In order to do that, you had to be very organized with your time because there were so many different things going on and so many things that you could get involved with. It could get pretty hectic and stressful. A lot of students were organized because they had to be—there was no other choice in order to get the work done.

There are enriched Lower School experiences.

I think it's surprising the amount that was expected of kids in Grades 4 and 5. The projects we did and were pretty impressive. Now that I think back, we did some pretty crazy projects, science fairs and things like that. I remember the kids in my class coming up with the craziest ideas that actually make sense in Grade 4. I feel like we learned a lot at a young age. We took French from Grade 3, and I don't think that's a thing at a lot of other schools.
Both of our children are in the Lower School and are having a happy and enriched experience at SJK. They both enjoy their teachers, homeroom, and specialty teachers alike. The smaller class sizes allow for personalized learning and extra experiences. Our daughter's class approached the Head of School for approval to find space on campus to plant a pollinator garden during their Honey Bee Unit. The garden is now thriving and this is a special memory for my daughter and her friends. The Outdoor Educational Experience class is a favourite with lots of time outdoors and on the beautiful campus, building shelters learning about animals, and making maple syrup in the spring. Both kids have made lovely friends and continue to grow friendships. Of course, being in the lower school they enjoy the playground facilities and field games during recess with a much-used Gaga ball pit. There are plenty of co-curricular activities after school that keep our children busy and engaged, Lego club and Ukulele club as favourites.

There's an emphasis on respect and curiosity.

I think that's another value that is very much instilled in our students. I think that there's a huge culture of respect here, respect for each other, respect for their teachers, respect for our traditions, and also respect for other people's ideas and opinions and being curious about trying to understand what someone else's point of view might be. It might be different from your own.

From our experience, the quality of teaching is high, with teachers regularly going above and beyond. Within the Lower School, there is an abundance of communication from teacher to parent. From the weekly emails of classroom activity and learning updates to the frequent posts using the onSJK app to share photographs of students at work, there are plenty of avenues of communication used at SJK. One of my favorites is the use of Seesaw which is a classroom-sharing tool that both teachers and students can share information. What a treat it is to hear the posts our kids have generated, reading or problem-solving as a recording in their own voices. Teachers also use Seesaw to share observations and remarks on students' work, which is helpful to have a constant and current view of how our kids are working in the classroom. Classroom and learning issues have been supported by the teachers with helpful responsiveness.
