Stanstead’s history is long and varied—it will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2022—apparent in the buildings as well as the traditions that continue at the school today. It was founded in 1872 by the Wesleyan Conference as a co-educational school, though both of those things have fluctuated over the years: it became a property of the Methodist Church, became a boys’ school, became a property of the United Church of Canada, welcomed girls again in 1979, and then ended its denominational affiliation. All of that history is very present and celebrated, and it imparts to students a sense of permanency and of belonging to something greater than themselves. The student population is relatively small, at 200, and the community is very strong and centralized, something the school rightly sees as a strength. The academics, as you’d expect, are very strong, but the culture of the school is a primary draw, especially for families looking at the boarding program. Stanstead accepts both boarding and day students, though the school is structured around boarding and maintains a very global perspective across the curricular areas.
We questioned the school adminstration

"Parents are surprised by the level of independence their children achieve. While students are supervised 24 hours a day, they are responsible for ensuring that they meet commitments and all school expectations. Adults are there to guide them along their way, but students leave Stanstead better able to balance life's demands."

Gr. 12 (current) — Sending our son to Stanstead College has been one of the best decisions we've ever made. From the very first day, we felt an overwhelming sense of warmth, professionalism, and care. This isn’t just a school, it’s a second home that has supported, challenged, and inspired our son in every way imaginable.
Academically, the rigour and personalized attention have helped him reach levels of confidence and achievement we hadn’t anticipated. The faculty are not only incredibly qualified but also deeply invested in the success and well-being of each student. They know our son, not just his grades, but who he is as a person.
Beyond the classroom, Stanstead offers a rich and diverse extracurricular life that has truly helped our son grow. Whether it’s athletics, leadership opportunities, community service, or the strong sense of school spirit, he’s been able to explore his passions and develop skills that will serve him far beyond his high school years.
The boarding experience has been nothing short of incredible. As parents, it’s hard to imagine being away from your child, but the care, structure, and sense of community at Stanstead quickly put our minds at ease. Our son has made amazing friendships that will last a lifetime and has become more independent, resilient, and mature than we could have ever imagined.
Stanstead College has exceeded our expectations on every level—academically, socially, emotionally, and personally. It’s a place that truly understands how to nurture potential and bring out the best in young people. We are endlessly grateful for the experience and cannot recommend it highly enough.
My 2 children attended Stanstead College for 4 years. They loved the class sizes being small, the networking with students from all over the world. The teachers are also involved in the athletic life and this is a plus as they get to know them from another perspective. The campus location is ideal as it is remote from big cities in a calm environment but yet it is possible for the students and they loved to go to town for snacks and some groceries. Being both athletes, they loved that they get to practice or play almost everyday. They loved the cafeteria as they got to know students from different grades at their table for lunch, people that they might know have spoken to otherwise. Table seatings change every semester so you get to know many students
Being a part of the Stanstead College community has been one of the best decisions we have taken for our daughters, they not only have grown up surrounded by high-quality academics, but also grown in a safe, healthy, friendly, and warm environment. Stanstead College has become a second home to my daughters, we always say that the school has sparked their creativity and it is true, they both have grown to be very creative people. We like the balance that the school brings to the students, academics, sports, music or arts, it is a balance that creates a complete formation. They love the school and being able to try new things every day, every season, or every year. We are very happy to see them enjoy and be in their element.
I had a life changing experience at Stanstead College. The supportive community at Stanstead enhanced my growth both as a student and as a person. I was encouraged to join athletic teams and try new clubs which taught me about the importance of being engaged and varied in what I do. The education I received helped me develop a strong work ethic and time management skills. In addition, the grade 12 AP program and intense university preparation led to an easy transition from high school to university. That being said, the thing that makes Stanstead so special is the staff, students, and friendly atmosphere. Both as a student and as an alumni, I feel like part of the Stanstead College family. This leaves me feeling a tremendous amount of support going into university and beyond. As a prospective student, you should expect a very warm welcome into the Stanstead College community. You should also expect to work hard and try new things if you want to get the best experience you can at Stanstead College.
Stanstead College built an important foundation for my undergraduate and graduate studies. Not only was I academically prepared, I developed a number of life skills which helped me maintain a balanced lifestyle throughout life. They instilled a passion for learning, athletics, the outdoors and helping others. The most significant dimension to my respect and admiration for the school stems from my teachers personally caring for my development. They were not simply people in front of the classroom, they coached me, went camping with me, advised me and supported me. Many of the students I attended with are still close friends and also speak highly of their experience at the school. I highly recommend Stanstead College as an outstanding private school which was instrumental in my development.
Unlike many other people, I look back at my time in high school with great fondness. As a quiet kid, the sense of community and the individual attention offered by the staff and faculty at Stanstead were priceless when it came to my development.
As a day student, my experience differed from that of a boarding student. In some ways I had it easier and can't speak to the hurdles faced by some students who would experience being away from home for the first time. In others, being a day student could be difficult when you felt like you were trying to manage being a part of two communities at once. Luckily, Stanstead placed a great emphasis on ensuring each and every member of the community had ample opportunity to belong.
Stanstead offers so much potential for anyone willing to be open to personal growth, and I would absolutely recommend it as a wonderful, challenging, and rewarding environment for your formative years.
