The big picture on The YMCA Academy
We summarized the school ourselves
The very heart of private education is providing options for parents looking to support their learner, and YMCA Academy sits at the very heart of that concept. It was founded and developed to support learners with needs that may not be adequately met within other settings. Likewise, it comprises an academic environment in which those students aren’t constantly reminded of their exceptionality. Here, they participate in a community that is supportive, sympathetic, and socially oriented around their personal needs. That, in itself—irrespective of the programs or the curriculum—can be transformational. This isn’t a school for others, making a concession for them. Rather, it is a school for them. That’s huge.

"The Academy offers the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum, balancing structure with flexibility to meet the diverse needs of neurodiverse learners. Our school serves neurodiverse students, including those with learning disabilities, ADHD, and mild autism, who thrive with personalized instruction and support. We value each student’s unique strengths and learning styles and foster an inclusive environment, which we maintain through nurturing relationships and a supportive community. With small classes ( no more than 11 in the high school and 8 in the middle school), experiential learning, and social-emotional resources, we cultivate academic and personal growth for each student. Students benefit from experiential learning, technology integration, and a variety of co-curricular activities to develop holistically."

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?
Gr. 9 (current) — Our son has thrived at the YMCA Academy. He has come out of his shell and grown in so many ways. He is active in extracurricular activities and participates in class. He is excited about learning and looks forward to attending his classes. His confidence has grown, and he is excited about his future. He cares about the quality of his work, wants to meet his deadlines, and is proud of his achievements. We were unsure what post-secondary path our son would take, but he has three university offers. This school has inspired our son and given him the confidence and belief that the world is open to him and that he can do anything he puts his mind to. This school was the best decision we made for our son.
Gr. 7 (current) — YMCA Academy is honestly the best school I've ever been to! It's a minimal environment, so you can see your friends all day! The teachers are super kind and caring and will support you to make you the best student possible and most prepared for life after the YMCA Academy. There are tons of study/quiet places to focus on work. When I got to the YMCA Academy, I really struggled with writing, spelling, and reading. After being here for six years (second year of the middle school program), I wrote a 12,000-word script for a film I'm producing. I can not say enough how amazing this school is and how it not only made me love school again, but also grew my confidence in myself, connected me with some of the best friends I've ever had, and prepared me to face whatever challenges await me at college! I LOVE IT HERE!
Gr. 7 (current) — The YMCA Academy has been a profoundly positive experience for our son and our family, from grade 7 to graduation. Truly all schools should be like this. It's a place where learning differences and neuro-divergences are embraced and nurtured to their full potential. The staff and teachers are exceptional. They are genuinely interested and invested in supporting students. And that extends to parents and caregivers as well. I am so grateful for its existence and have no hesitation in recommending anyone to this remarkable school. My nephew also attended before my son and it completely changed his outlook on school. The caring and supportive environment supported his strengths, allowing him to thrive. He met like-minded students who he is still close to today. He was even valedictorian at the graduation.
