What The York School says about their university placement record and services:

  • Choosing a university is one of the most important decisions a high school student makes. That is why The York School has a dedicated University Counselling team. Our in-house experts provide the information and guidance that our learners and their parents need to select the programs and universities that are right for them. Every student is matched with a university counsellor as soon as they enter our Senior School. As the student and counsellor build a relationship throughout high school, the counsellor develops a good understanding of the learner’s academic goals, career aspirations, extracurricular interests and personality. With this knowledge, the counsellor helps the student identify post-secondary environments where they’ll thrive. By equipping our students with excellent academic and life skills, and guiding them to the university and program that will best allow them to flourish, The York School sets its graduates on the path to adult success.

Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

The IB programme has a decisive advantage.

Insights from students, parents, and alumni highlight the world-class International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at The York School, which sets up students for success at top universities globally and equips them with essential life skills.

I have realised just how much York prepares you for university life, and I think that was just such a great asset that has really helped me succeed beyond York. I'm currently studying for joint honours in Geography and Political Science. The skills I learned at York, and with the IB Programme, were definitely transferable over to my degree, where there's a lot of writing, and where you constantly have to critically think about what you're writing.
The biggest impact I saw on my son was from the IB Programme. My son applied to a boarding program in the U.S. for high school, and because of his marks coming out of the IB middle-year programme, he was guided into the honours program there. That will put him on an AP path at his new school.
Having graduated with the IB diploma opens up an awful lot of doors for our kids, both to the top schools in Canada, south of the border, and around the world. Our IB scores are well above the world average annually. So our kids get an awful lot of choices and we’re very proud of where they go—some of the top schools around the world. When you’ve achieved the IB diploma, it is really an incredible achievement that opens doors.

Comprehensive university counselling is available.

Feedback from parents and students underscores the importance of The York School's robust university counselling program, starting early in high school, which aids students in navigating the complex application processes with in-depth one-on-one support, ensuring they are well-prepared for life beyond high school.

There's also university counselling, which was really helpful. My brothers didn't necessarily have the best university counselling at their school. And so I was really lucky to have a fantastic university counsellor who helped me through my decision and through the application process. Just knowing that I had that support there was also really comforting for me. Being able to get all my applications in early was also really nice.
I would also say everyone was so different and so confident in what they wanted to do—whether they were applying to a really great program like an Ivy League school or a great local program, whether they wanted to pursue arts or business or medicine—everybody was very interested in different things and I think we were all really well supported in what we wanted to do.
University counselling begins almost the moment that students arrive in high school. Students are paired one-on-one with a university counsellor who provides wonderful support and guidance both leading up to and throughout the entire application process. They help with course selection in Grade 10 to ensure the necessary courses are taken for the IB Diploma Program, in light of targeted post-secondary programs. They are very well-versed in all university applications – overseas, American, and, of course, Canadian, and provide detailed overviews of timelines for every possible consideration. The counsellors also offer insight and support to parents as well through information sessions and one-on-one meetings. Every year, the graduating class’ record of acceptances and scholarships to over 145 national and international post-secondary schools are testament to the university counselling program’s success.
