The big picture on Toronto District Christian High School

We summarized the school ourselves

TDChristian was founded in 1960, and the school has grown considerably over the years. Throughout has been an abiding attention to stewardship within the school community and beyond. Service trips are a cornerstone of the curriculum, and that tone is set from the first week in Grade 9, with all students spending two days working with organizations supporting the city’s homeless population—TDChristian has partnerships with the Yonge Street Mission, Scott Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Church of the Redeemer, Good Shepherd Centre, St. Francis’ Table, and the Salvation Army. Of course that’s just one aspect of the program, though it’s telling of the approach taken within the school. The families that turn to the school often do so in an awareness of the character learning that is woven throughout the curricular and extracurricular programs. Despite the age of the school, all the facilities have been recently updated, including the integration of technology in the classroom. That process is continuing with a capital and development campaign that is currently underway. The ideal student is one who will thrive in an active, diverse, values-based learning environment.

Gr. 11 (current) — I came to this school because I wanted an environment where I could grow my musical skill and also develop my skills when working with others. Through this school, I was able to participate in countless music programs either instrumental or vocal and was able to participate in classes instructing others as a teachers assistant. The teachers I worked with were passionate about giving me the ability to lead classes and work with students. My music and bible teachers; Mr Hayward and Mr. Samuels, went above and beyond, giving me opportunities to teach lessons and lead classes through deep theological discussions which I thoroughly enjoyed. They also met with me before class to discuss class plans and format which helped a lot. I am so much more confident now because of those chances and I cannot recommend TAing here if you have the chance. Their student environment is very friendly and I now have a very tightly-knit group of friends. The only thing I would change is the outlook on deadlines and rules in the classroom. Many classes are very loose when it comes to deadlines which leaves students ill-prepared for university and college. However, what I do appreciate is the newly enforced no phones in the class policy which has drastically altered the class environment and attitude making it much easier to concentrate.

Gr. 9 to Gr. 12 — After having a few years to reflect on my experience at TDCH in my undergraduate degree, I can safely say that my experience at TDCH was highly positive in my adolescence, shaped my character into the individual I am today, and projected the trajectory of my life in a clear direction. From that period of time, the development I went through as an individual sticks out the most, as I can now clearly see how my emotional maturity progressed from the ages of 14-18. Something that TDCH gave me that is truly irreplaceable is the friendships I made in high school and how those relationships are still so evident in my life. The people I was surrounded with were not just momentary relationships, but lifelong connections that shaped my life and still pour into me to this day. The beginning of my undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph was a very different transition than I expected, in social, academic, and relational ways. TDCH was a very warm, empathetic environment, but not necessarily challenging. Academically, I felt like I learned a lot, but not necessarily tested on things I didn't already know or was able to problem solve. In contrast, my first year at UofG was very academically challenging and dissimilar to anything I had learned at TDCH. I felt like I was struggling to keep up with the simplest of assignments, and there was no one to turn to for guidance. I have figured out the university system since then, but dealing with these academic struggles made the jump from high school to university that much more difficult. As I mentioned earlier, the community at TDCH is like no other, and the strong, close-knit family I felt like I had in my friendships was suddenly absent. Figuring out the academic change was difficult enough, but when simultaneously challenged with constant loneliness, I had a really hard time. It took a while for me to find my footing in the 'real world' outside of the TDCH bubble, and it was difficult to make relationships that replicated what TDCH had provided me with. The same goes for the professor-student relationships, as it was all of a sudden the default in university to be a nobody. While I wouldn't change anything about my experience at TDCH, I didn't feel as if it prepared me for the secular university environment, and it was very easy to feel entirely lost after leaving. A prospective student enrolling at TDCH should expect to feel at home. The rich, Christ-centered environment is the perfect blend of compassionate yet tangible, and taking the step to get involved in TDCH's extracurriculars can provide you with relationships that last a lifetime. The conception of high school can be unnerving, but fully embracing the new people, teachers, and environment around you can lead to the greatest memories!

Gr. 9 to Gr. 12,Gr. 9 to Gr. 12,Gr. 9 (current) — Our oldest son graduated three years ago from TDCH and continues to count his high school friends as his close social and spiritual community despite all of them being in different universities and colleges. This kind of school community amongst peers is actively fostered and developed within the halls of TDCH. Our sons will tell everyone who asks that the teachers at the school make all the difference and ranks highly as one thing they appreciate the most. They feel 'seen' and known by the staff. They also feel a high sense of confidence that the majority of the staff are truly at the top of their game in their respective fields and bring that sense of excellence and passion into classroom learning. Even teenagers can appreciate that! Our sons would say there are always things that could be improved upon at TDCH, but overall they are deeply grateful for their years at the high school.

All four of our children have attended TD Christian. Each of them has different interests, and each of them was able to be involved in activities that they enjoyed and that challenged them. Our children participated in sports teams, drama, robotics, and music. The varied ways that courses were presented provided opportunities for their different learning styles. Environmental block, physics block, and internship block were courses where learning involved hands on and practical activities. Each of our children were part of the earth and space science course as students, and three of them as TA's. The Algonquin trip continues to be one of their great memories. In addition, the service trips at the beginning of grade 9 and in grade 11, as well as the Belize service trip, helped them widen their understanding and view of the world.

I just started at Toronto District Christian High School so I haven't been here for long but I can already see that I am going to love it here. The teachers and students are really nice and welcoming and I feel like I can just be myself and relax more when I'm around them. The teachers help each student individually and consider their situations to find the best way to help each student reach their full potential in what ever subject they are doing. I am used to more structure in my school day but I think the structure the school give is enough because it allows me to take responsibility and learn to do things on my own without having to be told to.

Prior to enrolling our son in TD, we had mixed views on whether we should enroll him in Christian private high school. We were worried that he would be sheltered from the challenges of the outside world. In the first week, his class went downtown Toronto to assist those in need. This was a memorable experience for him. That was only the beginning of his experience at TDCH. Our son loves the fact that he is asked to actively engage in student life. The entire school setting is designed to make him feel that he is in a safe space, which is so important for students. Overall, the entire experience has been positive for him. Our son values the friendships that are being formed and continually looks forward to his time at school.

Our son has truly enjoyed his first year at TDCH. The class sizes are small. In the first week of school, grade 9 went on the Service Trip to have the opportunity to know each other and to have an experience in community. In my opinion, it helps a lot with transition period from a different school. The older school had 10x less people than TDCH, so the Service Trip helped him meet new kids and get used to being with more people. My son loves the school, and the warm and positive atmosphere. He also enjoys their exclusive program called "The Pulse" where students make a television show to show to the rest of the school. He says he enjoys all the creativity, and the "hands-on" work.

TD Christian does not have 1800 students which is typical in most high schools. The students in this school don't get lost in a huge school. Teachers know students by name and I think this makes a big difference in how a teenager feels about going to school. My daughter graduated from TD Christian and went on to attend York University Engineering program, where she is excelling. My daughter enjoyed her overall experience at TD Christian, and made some great friends. Her transition to a university program was easy. My son is in 10th grade and is part of the music program, the robotics club, the hands-on video creation and video editing class, and will be starting computer coding classes in grade 11. Environmental Block is a course that was taken by both of my kids, and this course is something very unique to this school. My son really enjoys TD Christian, especially the diversity of the courses he has been able to take and can take in Grade 11 and Grade 12.

The care the teachers give to the students is outstanding. We have had some experience with other schools and are familiar with the pattern of education there. We were able to find a big difference in how the teachers take it as a personal commitment, mission and responsibility to care deeply for each of the students. The teachers genuinely help and guide the children and also pray for them and with them in several occasions. The teachers develop personal interactions with the students, and take the role of mentors, counselors, older siblings and sometimes even parents. Even after graduation, the relationships are maintained and they become friends for life.

My experience at TDCH was amazing. The community there is so welcoming and the environment made me safer than I had at any other school. The teachers are very understanding and want the best for the kids. The students are extremely kind and it’s very obvious they were raised in a Christian facility. They have some quirks though that are quite strange. Their lunch period is 25 minutes, they have no dances, they aren’t allowed to carry bags to class, and they have little variety when it comes to sports. Overall, though, TDCH has an amazing atmosphere and any kid raised with good morals would feel very at home there.

Parent, Crystal Pitcher (2018)

Without doubt the single most appreciated part of TDCH is the teachers' personal and individualized attention to each student. They care about the kids as people, and show them the respect that they are trying to engender in them by listening to their views and appreciating their individuality. When my daughter realized that her previous public school had not prepared her for the level of math education that was required at TDCH, her math teacher took the time after school and at lunch to quickly bring her up to speed. She was very concerned as Math is her best subject, and she was afraid that she would fall behind. Her teacher's encouragement and patience with her anxiety was duly responsible for her A+ results at the end of the year.
