The big picture on Vianney Academy

We summarized the school ourselves

“Vianney Academy was a life saver for our family,” says one parent, and that sentiment is common among the parent community. The program is small, student-centered, and eminently supportive, addressing the unique needs of students who have struggled in other, less focused learning environments. The main thrust of the program is on core literacies, gaining a sense of mastery with literacy and numeracy while also building the students’ confidence as learners. The administration is prone to engage with the parent community, and many feel that they are being listened to, and truly understood, for the first time. A rich co-curricular program, including frequent field trips, helps keep things fun, and connection high. Simply, it’s one of those excellent programs that was founded in order to change lives, and help families, and it’s proven its ability to do precisely that.

We questioned the school adminstration

Gr. 3 (current) — Thomas really appreciates the small class sizes as well as the teachers and staff who really care about his progress and learning. The school always provides therapies that help him with his concentration, memory, and focus. It fully caters to each individual student and their needs and there is a lot of one-on-one help for each student. One thing Thomas found difficult was that the curriculum uses computers a lot and he is a bit sensitive to screen time. But this is more an issue with the Ontario curriculum than the school itself. Thomas also enjoys the field trips that Vianney organizes, which often involve teaching them how to use public transportation. This is an invaluable life skill. He also enjoys the family feel of the school as it is not very big, so you are never just a number.

Gr. 5 (current) — My daughter is a non-speaking 10-year-old who started summer camp at Vianney in 2024. She was able to build relationships with the teachers quickly, so we enrolled her part-time for the 2024-25 season. It was her first time enrolled in an academic program, and we are already seeing great strides in all areas of study - as of Jan 2025, she is now full-time. The school is great at accommodating her special needs and meeting her needs academically and is currently completing work at grade levels from Gr 2-4, depending on the subject. The teacher gives me a daily account of progress (even when it's not so progressive), as well as providing written weekly updates via app. Homework is given to refresh learning, not to overwhelm with extra assignments. Tests are accommodated in class and given with time and patience. My daughter is actually learning! As a bonus, they also sourced therapists who will work with the students during school hours. To date, my daughter is enrolled in Neurodevelopment through Movement, NILD Educational Therapy, and Speech-Language Therapies. In the last 9 months, her progress in speaking has been a thrill and surprise to everyone in our family circle. We couldn't be more thrilled.

Vianney Academy was a life saver for our family. My son had trouble attending in a regular classroom in a publicly funded school. The class sizes were too big and he could not concentrate or learn well. He was constantly in trouble because he was easily distracted. As a result, he hated school. After we made the switch, he actually loves to go to school. He treasures the close friendships he has made and truly loves his teacher! Our son likes the freedom he has to learn at his own pace which makes learning more fun for him. He enjoys Science the best as they really get to learn in a hands on way. Vianney delivers quality education with a caring attitude!

My son has attended Vianney Academy since SK. I tried one year at another school but came right back! Vianney is a warm, instructive, fun, student focused educational experience. They teach tailored to your child's learning needs. Karen Uschold is profound in her knowledge, experience and gems of wisdom that she pours into each student and family. The only concern and goal is for every student to learn, develop and grow. And whatever is needed to overcome the barriers, they are right on it to ensure success. You never feel ashamed or embarrassed or that you have to make excuses for your child's learning challenges because the only care at Vianney is that whatever is needed for your child to learn, they will figure it out. The kids are happy, the outings are awesome, the education is excellent.

Both my children experienced attention to their worries and concerns. They were listened to beyond any of my expectations. Coming with an at-risk profile, attention deficit, oppositional behaviour, OCD tendencies, both my children felt they were understood and given the chance to build on their skills, despite their weaknesses. My children were impressed with the level of commitment from the prinicipal and the teacher and support staff. Academic learning was only one aspect of the school, the value of relationship and positive interactions with peers and the local community played a huge part in balancing out my children's emotional life. Dedication and commitment is definitely strong qualities at Vianney, and my children have gone on to form deep, positive friendships as a result. The drive to accomplish academics is magically incorporated in Vianney's mission.
