The big picture on Westmont Montessori School

We summarized the school ourselves

Offering a Montessori education from Preschool to Grade 12, Westmont Montessori School is located alongside 143 acres of parkland. Not surprisingly, kids at Westmount spend a lot of time outside, whether it’s hiking, bouldering, or mountain biking in the park, exploring rock pools on the adjoining beach, or gaining practical skills in the on-campus gardens. The school offers an array of inspiring and fun extracurriculars that include a Mandarin club, band, chess, STEM, mime, and table tennis. The school has bright, modern classrooms and outdoor learning shelters. While kids at Westmont tend to excel academically, teachers also focus on fostering independence and a passion for learning and developing new interests. This exciting and dynamic environment when combined with dedicated and caring teachers provides the ideal place for kids to thrive.

1. Who are you, as a school?

Gr. 1 (current),Preschool (current),SK (current),Gr. 4 (current) — As a parent with several children at Westmont Montessori, I can confidently say how proud I am to be sending my children here. The teachers and staff are beyond caring and extremely experienced and well-versed in the Montessori system. The incorporation of nature, with the outstanding forest and beach behind the school, is second to none. I have found the school to be extremely welcoming and open in its communication. My children have blossomed in the last two years. This is a school that is aiming to teach children how to apply in real life what they are learning—not simply to memorize and sit at a desk, but to get out in the real world, build firm relationships, contribute to society, and interact with the world as a whole. After searching for many years to find the right school for all four of my children to attend, I am proud to say that we have found a wonderful place for them! I would encourage any parent in the Victoria area to send their children to Westmont.

Gr. 2 (current),K (current) — Westmont provides a supportive learning environment for my children with plenty of opportunities to spend time in nature. The teaching style supports individuality in student needs while still achieving the requirements of formal education. As a parent I appreciate the transparency in administration as well as opportunities to be involved at various levels. The size of the school helps us feel like a true member of the community and not just another student. I feel comfortable bringing up discussions of concern to teachers and admin alike when times have arisen. The values of Westmont put the children first. The facilities are wonderful and although we lack a gymnasium I do feel the less formal outdoor space serves the kids well. I do think my kids worry about the decrease in student body in middle school and beyond and as a parent I worry about not having enough different individuals for my child to interact with.

We have 2 children at Westmont Montessori, 6th and 7th grade, ages 11 and 13, respectfully. The children absolutely love this school. We just relocated from the States (Orlando, FL). This was a brand new school for the girls and we can all say that Westmont has welcomed the girls in a very thoughtful way and they have made great friends with great kids quite quickly. This is what they appreciate the most: being at a school with like-minded kids who are open-minded and love learning, as well as being at a school where they get to express themselves authentically and be celebrated and encouraged for their unique gifts, talents, interests and personalities. The teachers have been phenomenal and do a great job listening to our kids' needs and meeting them where they're at while challenging them at the same time. We have been involved with the PAC and the school Board and feel inspired to be a part of shaping the future of Westmont. Their high school 2.0 vision and curriculum are game changers.

At Westmont, my daughters have felt safe, nurtured, and valued as individuals. They appreciate the freedom to explore what they are most interested in and to express themselves and their interests in so many unique ways. They value the incredible commitment of the teachers and love every one of them. They are excited to go to school and often want to stay longer. They love how they are encouraged when they develop an interest in a topic and are given the resources and attention to pursue it as far as they want. At the same time, they find the programs challenge them to think hard, communicate better, and interact with their peers in teamwork that I consider to be a good model for their future careers.

My children love this school. They adore their teachers and have a sense of pride and ownership of their educational experience. My eldest loves that he gets to choose which work he completes in a day, mostly leaning towards math. He also finds it natural to work with another person to solve problems and likes to choose someone with similar interests to work with. My daughter loves to challenge herself and try new things. She likes that she can ask for more complex work when she wants and her teachers are happy to help her change herself. Both kids understand the importance of kindness and community and when the children get together in the community, their behaviour with other kids really shows that kindness is taught at such a young age that it comes naturally to them, with all children. I love that they are smarter than me in lots of areas already and are continually teaching me things.

My daughter is always thrilled to attend Westmont - she literally runs to school every single day! She loves the inclusive, caring and holistic environment: an environment that fosters peer learning and peer support like no other. She strives in an environment where she gets to make so many decisions independently leading to her playing a major role in how her education plays out. The Montessori philosophy fosters independence and free will allowing my daughter to reach her fullest potential. I knew the moment I got pregnant we would attend Westmont Montessori school. The lessons in community (big and small), generosity, inclusiveness, mindfulness, care for each other, the self, the planet, and so much more are incredibly meaningful to our family. Thank you so much to the entire Westmont Community for helping us raise a child who will flourish in this world.
