    What is passover?

    Passover, or in Hebrew “pesach,” is a high holiday celebrated by the Jewish people. It is an eight-day festival that takes place in the early spring, usually during the month of April. It commemorates the escape of Jews from slavery in ancient Egypt.

    During passover, Jews have what are called “seders,” which are meals in which they drink wine, eat matzoh (unleavened bread), and retell the story of the exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt. During this holiday, Jews also avoid anything consuming any food or drink containing “Chametz” (wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt).

    What does a passover camp have to offer?

    Most private Jewish day schools close during passover. This means many Jewish families will scramble for some kind of accommodation for their children for this holiday.

    Luckily, there are many passover camps and programs to choose from, especially in Toronto, the GTA, and across Ontario and Quebec. Most of these run for the entire eight days of the holiday (possibly excluding weekends and the first two holiest days). Some of these are run by a Jewish camp or organization (such as the JCC in Toronto), while others are run by secular organizations.

    Passover camps offer a variety of programming. This includes educational programming, such as computers, science, math, and debate. It also includes arts programs, such as music, dance, and visual arts. And it includes sports programs, such as gymnastics, soccer, and basketball.
