JICS Summer Lab is a unique inquiry-based day camp in Toronto’s Annex neighborhood, rooted in the world-class philosophy of the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study at U of T, which blends experiential learning with the joy of summer camp.
Launching as a pilot this July, we offer four one-week sessions for kids ages 4-9, with three programs: Natural Curiosity (outdoor education), Creative Lab (arts & crafts), and Imagination Lab (multi-interest).
With a strong staff-to-child ratio, led by teacher candidates and ECE grads, we nurture curiosity, foster creativity, and build lifelong skills—all while having fun!

We’re known for our inquiry-based, play-focused approach that centers on the child’s curiosity and interests. Our experience stands out because we combine the world-class educational philosophy of the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute for Child Study with hands-on, experiential learning. Our animating philosophy is rooted in the belief that when children feel safe and supported, they take risks and engage more fully in their learning. For our inaugural summer we’re most proud of our Natural Curiosity program, which integrates Indigenous perspectives and land-based learning, fostering a deep connection to the environment and inspiring students to become active, responsible learners.

Our staff is primarily composed of teacher candidates and Early Childhood Education graduates, bringing expertise and fresh perspectives. They undergo training in child development, inquiry-based learning, and safety protocols. We are confident campers will find them memorable, as we purposefully select counselors who are passionate, creative, and committed to nurturing each child's curiosity. With a 1:5 staff-to-camper ratio, we ensure individualized attention. We also strive for balanced gender and ethnic representation, reflecting Toronto’s diversity. Our team’s dedication to education ensures a child-centered approach to learning in everything we do.
