Our Kids definition: Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Merrick Preparatory School follows the Ontario provincial curriculum for Grades 9 to 12. We offer a wide range of University, Academic and Open level courses designed to assist students in gaining their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Upon graduation, our students have the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to gain entrance to top world ranked universities in Canada and internationally. Our graduates have maintained a 100% university placement rate to their first-choice university since our founding in 2012. All of our students also write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test and, for those requiring additional support, we offer the Ontario Literacy Course in Grade 12. We also offer weekly IELTS preparation for international students.

    What Fulford Academy says:

    Each class begins with students being presented with complex, real-world problems they have not yet been taught how to solve. During these discovery-learning sessions students are encouraged to collaborate with their classmates and to think critically and creatively to develop approaches to the problem using their current knowledge. For the remainder of the class, learning is done more traditionally with the teacher guiding students as they build on their knowledge. Students learn increasingly advanced tools in the form of mathematical equations, algorithms and technologies which allow for greater efficiency when solving complex problems. Teachers present these tools through traditional instructional lessons. Students develop mastery using these tools through daily practice with ample teacher support. Students then revisit complex, real-world problems using their newly learned equations, algorithms and technologies to solve the problems efficiently and accurately.

    We use Ontario Ministry of Education recommended textbooks that prepare students for university business and engineering.

    Calculator policy:

    Students require a scientific calculator for all math courses. Use of scientific non-graphing calculators is allowed on most quizzes, assignments, tests and exams. Graphing calculators are not recommended as graphing calculators are not allowed during many tests and exams.

    Teaching approach:

    Science is taught in an expository capacity but is strongly supported by inquiry learning. Students learn the foundational information through direct teacher instruction to support vocabulary acquisition. Students are then encouraged to think critically about these new ideas and demonstrate their learning through investigative and experiential learning techniques. Students are given lab experience and then asked to design their own lab to answer a scientific question as part of their summative assignment. These strategies are designed to support and encourage student curiosity about scientific concepts. Students are engaged in classroom activities through the use of online labs and demonstrations, as well as hands on practical lab experience.

    An equal balance of traditional and social justice inspired programs is the focus of our literature program. Core concepts and theories are discussed and deconstructed in detail using a variety of teaching methods. Through imitation and daily choral repetition, the students become actively engaged in their English language learning.     At Merrick Preparatory School, teachers provide a receptive approach to teaching drama. Teachers provide cross-curricular opportunities to discuss historical content in areas of visual, musical, theatrical arts and how they have changed over time. Students have the opportunity for hands on application of set design and costume design. Students will also develop their own monologues and plays in a learner-centered method of instruction.     What Fulford Academy says:

    We offer the Health Active Living Education credit (Physical Education) in our grade 9 program. Physical Education is a major part of our holistic approach to student life. Students must choose 2 co-curricular activities for at least an hour each day, including baseball, soccer, basketball, ball hockey, ice hockey, badminton, volleyball, track, among others. All activities have a structured educational component. Physical Education is encouraged by all staff in order to keep the students active, healthy, and entertained. During the winter months, students are brought to local fitness clubs to supplement physical activity. Our residential program has mandatory activities on weekends often involving a physical component. In addition, we have a weight room with various free weights, weight machine, heavy boxing bag, ellipticals, running machines, stationary bike, and rowing machine (erg).

  • Learning disabilities
    Dyslexia (Language-Based Learning Disability)
    This is a learning disability that can limit a child's ability to read and learn. It can have a variety of traits. A few of the main ones are impaired phonological awareness and decoding, problems with orthographic coding, and auditory short-term memory impairment.
    Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
    This is a sound differentiation disorder involving problems with reading, comprehension, and language.
    Dyscalculia
    This is a kind of specific learning disability in math. Kids with this math disorder have problems with calculation. They may also have problems with math-related concepts such as time and money.
    Dysgraphia
    This is a kind of specific learning disability in writing. It involves problems with handwriting, spelling, and organizing ideas.
    Language Processing Disorder
    This is characterized by having extreme difficulty understanding what is heard and expressing what one wants to say. These disorders affect the area of the brain that controls language processing.
    Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NLD)
    These involve difficulties interpreting non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language. They're usually characterized by a significant discrepancy between higher verbal skills and weaker motor, visual-spatial, and social skills.
    Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit
    A characteristic seen in people with learning disabilities such as Dysgraphia or Non-verbal LD. It can result in missing subtle differences in shapes or printed letters, losing place frequently, struggles with cutting, holding pencil too tightly, or poor eye/hand coordination.
  • Developmental
    Autism
    Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).
    Asperger's Syndrome
    On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.
    Down syndrome
    his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.
    Intellectual disability
    This is a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning (e.g., reasoning, learning, and problem solving). Intellectual disabilities are also known as general learning disabilities (and used to be referred to as a kind of mental retardation).
    Williams syndrome
    This is a rare genetic disorder present at birth. It is characterized by intellectual disabilities or learning problems, unique facial features, and cardiovascular problems.
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. These may include growth deficits, facial anomalies, and damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to cognitive, behavioural, and other problems.
  • Behavioral and Emotional
    Troubled behaviour / troubled teens
    roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. This can lead to behavioural and emotional issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behaviour, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
    Clinical Depression
    This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life.
    Clinical anxiety
    This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror.
    Suicidal thoughts
    This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life.
    Drug and alcohol abuse
    This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning.
    Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
    This is a disruptive behavioural disorder which normally involves angry outbursts, often directed at people of authority. This behaviour must last continuously for six months or more and significantly interfere with daily functioning.
  • Physical
    Multiple sclerosis
    This is a condition of the central nervous system. It affects the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Symptoms can include fatigue, loss of motor control, memory loss, depression, and cognitive difficulties.
    Cerebral palsy
    his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.
    Muscular dystrophy
    Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals.
    Spina Bifida
    This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine.
    Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
    This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.
    Blindness
    Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness."
    Deafness
    Hearing impairment, also known as "hearing loss," is a partial or total inability to hear. The degree of hearing impairment varies between people. It can range from complete hearing loss (or deafness) to partial hearing loss (meaning the ears can pick up some sounds).
    Cystic Fibrosis

The school is so strong academically and professional; they prepare the students for life ahead. My son has so much improved at all skills. They prepare them through assignments, presentations, experiments, researches quizzes and exams. The students don’t need extra help from outside you can rely completely on the school teachers to achieve the best. They challenge them, guide them and push them to do their best and achieve higher scores. Still, they care a lot about their students it’s the best atmosphere for students to gain confidence and learn. It wasn’t an easy program for my son but he did his best and learned from his mistakes and in the end he achieved what he was hoping for and got accepted to the university he wished for.
The quality of education is truly superior. Being a school that runs the OSSD, in a smaller setting, with care and time given to each student, means that the true spirit of OSSD and the foundational elements on which it was built, is fully transferred to the kids. The style of teaching is also effective and impactful. Their focus on learning and linking topics to real life, brings life and clarity to each topic that my child learns. This is exactly how it should be done. Furthermore, the balance between assignments, quizzes and exams seems to be just right, even though it is heavy and challenging across the year. Most importantly, the approach and topics really prepare the children to their next phase of education, at the University level.
Because most students come from different parts of the world, they mostly are used to other school systems and methods. However, the school does a great job in having a standardized system for all students and still follow the Ontario school curriculum in order. It is worth mentioning that because the school has a great academic level, and its main goal is to help you get accepted to top-ranked universities, the workload is heavy. This does have an advantage, as students learn to become responsible and organized with their work so that it doesn't feel too hard. Classes are top-level with teachers expert in their subjects. And thus, learning is effective. For seniors, academics is somewhat different than other years, classes are more centered to your interest for university, this is so that you are prepared the following year for your career. Overall, academics are just right if you are organized and responsible for your work.

The teaching staff is engaged and personal.

There are so many great teachers at Merrick Prep School. I was initially not very enthusiastic about learning, but these two teachers made me love learning and challenged me in numerous ways in math and science. They helped me beyond their working hours, staying until 9:00 PM if needed. They supported me with personal issues, making sure I was comfortable addressing any problems.
One thing my daughter continuously speaks about was the quality of education at Merrick Preparatory School. She loves the teachers and the time they invest in the students. She was even excited about her upcoming exams. She also enjoys the various outings and extracurricular activities the school offers. 
The teachers would know when I wasn't feeling well, because the classes were small. They made sure to talk to me and support me whenever they noticed I wasn't as interactive as usual. Personal care was one of my favorite things about Merrick Preparatory School.

I wanted to be in a small school, and Merrick Preparatory School was recommended to me by a friend. Small class sizes made it easy to interact with teachers and ask questions. The environment in Merrickville is very environmentally friendly and safe, with no distractions or dangers. The natural beauty of the area, including the Rideau Canal, provided a nurturing environment for studying and relaxation.
What surprised me the most was how informal and friendly the relationship was with the leadership team and the teachers. It is a highly regarded school with strong academics, but we also felt like family, and we are still in contact with most of the people from Merrick.

Before I joined Merrick Preparatory School, I didn't know about many fields like psychology and nanotechnology. Before making selections, we had someone brief us on these courses, their purpose, what we would use them for, and what interests they serve. This set an orientation for me regarding where I went ahead. I enjoyed math and science-based courses, but the school also encouraged us to learn about other courses that might be interesting in the future.
We've all tried to be smart in class by saying, "Well, when am I going to need this later in life?" With Merrick, while some things in the Canadian curriculum could be seen as a little useless, almost everything seems to play a potential part in what could be our futures. For example, one of the grade nine classes is an introduction to business class. Before taking it, I had never even thought about business in my future, but the things we were taught are so much more than just career opportunities. For example, we learned about how we can responsibly use our money instead of throwing it away, and about our rights as an employee. This type of education continues throughout every class, with us learning beneficial things. The work is all to the perfect level for us: pushing us just enough to get us to think, but not so hard that we cannot do it.
The subjects are interesting and the teachers make them relatable. For instance, students in one class were trained in how to make a budget and were given different situations to make them aware of the impact of important issues, such as cost of living, salaries or allowances, etc. In other instances, the importance of nutrition and exercise was thoroughly explained. The work is challenging, but assigned to challenge, not to make students fail and teachers are always ready to give additional information. Students can talk to the teachers about workload, how to improve their understanding of the subject matter or to manage their schedules better. Additional support is available when needed, in order to ensure that there is an understanding of the information and not just memorizing.

The community is diverse and inclusive.

Respect and inclusion are some of the most important values at school, and they're put into action by including everyone's cultural background into food, celebrations, and the genuine interest in everyone at school. Students and teachers alike contribute to this amazing environment. What connected us, families at Merrick, is the focus on strong academics and on shaping students who are global citizens who can think outside the box and are well-prepared for university.
Despite the initial language issue, she loved the school environment, including the food and the diverse student body. Her positive attitude and good reports from teachers encouraged us and made us feel that the effort to get her there was worthwhile. We were initially concerned that changing her curriculum from French to English would be difficult for her because she had been educated in French since she was little, even though we spoke English at home. I would ask her daily how she was adjusting to the new school and curriculum. Gradually, she responded positively, saying she found the switch manageable and actually enjoyed the quality of education at Merrick.
While I am not too familiar on that front, the multitude of international students at MPS, from all corners of the world makes the student body more of a United Nations of children who want to learn, and who are disciplined as well. This is not to say that MPS selects only students who are disciplined, but are actually able to ensure that all students are compliant with the rigorous curricular of the academic year. And I actually experienced, through my child, how they are able to succeed on that front. It was clear that this can only be achieved in small school setting, which allowed my son to develop a close bond with all his teachers, who were then able to spend the needed time with him to ensure he succeeds. Noting that my son did travel to another country to meet up with a friend he met at MPS.

Strong communication and support are offered.

All in all, it was just a life-changing experience for my son. The interactions between both administration and teachers were outstanding. We received weekly reports from all teachers in all subjects, and in between, there was always time and room for questions, which were answered immediately.
The school keeps communication with parents on a weekly basis for updates on students' progress. They also discuss concerns and work with parents towards solving them before evolving into a more serious matter. After the pandemic, the online learning was excellent my son had quality synchronous learning. In small classes, all students are forced to engage and participate in classes and live online class teaching if my son was late or absent I would be directly informed by email. The class is video recorded. The students can re-watch lessons if they need some more time to process. And during office hours they can ask for teacher support if needed. At MPS you get international education with students from around the globe and gain entry into world-ranked universities.
The leadership in the school is excellent. We are kept informed as to what is happening in the school, and the school is also extremely responsive to any requests that we might have. Examples of the latter include the flexibility over course selection, the acceptance that our daughter takes classes such as life-saving outside of the school which requires an early departure, and her need to get to a part-time job a few days of the week. Even during these COVID-dominated times, the school is very welcoming, and as long as the proper precautions are taken the school welcomes us in at our convenience. The entire admissions and support program have been conducted in a truly efficient and professional manner and we feel that the needs of our daughter have been very well managed.

Independence and confidence are fostered.

My daughter's life changed, she is more independent now. The confidence level is excellent. The school does not interfere with her background of being a Christian. She is not forced to take part in activities that are against our religion. She enjoys going to the school because it is small, and she has a small circle of friends. For prospective parents, if you are looking for a second home away from home for your children, Merrick Prep is the place to be. Your child will be free to be themselves and they will be well looked after and you can have peace of mind knowing that your child is in good hands. The school reinforces discipline especially in academics which is good for learners and they become accountable for their schoolwork.
