Different types of arts schools

There are several different types of art schools to choose from. This includes both visual and performing arts schools. Some of these schools focus on a particular art form, while others provide instruction in a wide range of arts.

Visual arts schools can provide instruction in any combination of the following subjects:

Performing arts schools can provide instruction in any combination of the following subjects:

Approaches to teaching art

There are several ways to teach art. For the fine arts, the main approaches are receptive, creative, and expressive.

Beyond these pedagogies, there are also different ways schools can deliver an arts curriculum. Most schools either have a segregated or integrated art curriculum.

With a segregated curriculum, art is taught separately from other core subjects. On this approach, one part of the day is reserved for the arts and the other part for other core subjects. For instance, in a dance school, it may be that half the day is dedicated to dance instruction, while the other half is dedicated to math, science, English, and the like.

Meanwhile, with an integrated curriculum, art is not taught as a completely separate subject from other core subjects. On this approach, the arts are found in many parts of the curriculum. For instance, in Waldorf schools, music, poetry, and the visual arts are often threaded throughout the curriculum.

Benefits of private art schools

There are many perks to going to a private art school. Like other private schools in Canada, they will tend to have first-rate teachers, small classes, individualized instruction, plenty of resources, and several other benefits. Each of course will also have its own unique culture, community, and feel.

Beyond that, an art school will give your child the chance to pursue their passion. From singing and dancing to drawing and painting, they’ll be able to explore and develop their unique interests and talents.

This often provides just the kind of challenge and stimulation that a child or teenager needs. In addition to kids with an artistic bent, art schools can often be ideal for kids with advanced learning needs, and other special needs, such as learning disabilities and behavioural issues.
