The big picture on Ashwood Glen

We summarized the school ourselves

Ashwood Glen is a recent and welcome addition to the private school market. It’s in the process of reaching IB accreditation, a process that takes two years, though is already teaching to that curriculum. The benefits of the IB include integration within a global community of learners, as well as as internationally recognized and admired approach to learning. The instructional spaces were purpose built with the Ashwood program in mind, allowing for movement and a high integration between learners around shared learning tasks. The incorporation of a Maker Space signals an intention to help children develop the 21st century skills they’ll need when they advance to the secondary grades and beyond.

We questioned the school adminstration

Ashwood Glen: Q&A 2020

Watch our Ashwood Glen Q&A discussion with Dareen (Parent), Marsha (Parent), Dina (Parent) to gain fresh insight into the school’s culture, values, and strengths.

Gr. 6 (current) — Our son is currently in his 3rd year at Ashwood Glen. Due to his own personal challenges, and a public school unable to meet his needs, we researched other avenues of schooling. Ashwood Glen has more than addressed our son's needs and is comfortably inclusive. Every child has different strengths, and this school can support and challenge children. I would say that because it’s a newer school, the older grades have fewer students which is great for ratios and instruction. However, for my son, it can also pose social challenges for friendships, which is an area he struggles. I appreciate how the staff supports this by encouraging group projects and positive cooperation, and through the varied lively group discussions engaged in during class time.

Parent, Ireland Bartlett (2023)

Nursery/Toddler (current) — Ireland is thriving at Ashwood Glen! Her teachers and the support team are all so kind, patient, and engaging. She is encouraged to be herself and is given the space to focus on what she enjoys most at school. She is afforded the opportunity to select her preferred activities. Although she may have subjects that are not her favorite, her teachers strategically weave those elements into her day to ensure she is working on her knowledge and skills in all areas. Her social skills have improved greatly. My daughter has become very articulate and she loves to recite their classroom songs and learnings at home. We see weekly improvements in her abilities and she looks forward to school and seeing her teacher and classmates each day!

Gr. 1 (current),Preschool (current) — Our family has been amongst the first to join the Ashwood Glen school community in its opening year. We transferred in from another Montessori school in the neighborhood and were immediately drawn to the pedagogy of the school and its overall philosophy to approach learning and developing independence and leadership skills from the early years. As an IB graduate, knowing it’s never too early to plan and prepare for secondary school and further studies, we were keen to enroll our children in a program anchored in IB foundations, which enriches the Ontario curriculum in a nurturing environment. Our children are now 8 and 4 years old and have embraced the small class sizes and integrated curriculum, particularly in the primary years' program, where a unit of focus being taught by the homeroom teacher is reinforced across all subjects - such as performing arts, visual arts, and French. For instance, studying the indigenous community as part of history and social studies is incorporated into language arts for creative writing, indigenous painting, music, and some basic vocabulary in French. Experiencing movement across classrooms promotes independence, encourages creativity, and serves as preparation for the eventual transition into secondary school. Older students are paired with younger students for buddy reading, extra-curricular activities, and seasonal programming, such as concerts. Teachers and staff are always available to discuss student progress and are open to continuous improvement opportunities and feedback. It has been a dream to be part of this school community for the past three years.

Nursery/Toddler (current) — Our son started at Ashwood Glen in the Toddler class. Within a little over a month, we saw major developmental leaps! He knew how to count to 10 and knew the entire alphabet. To this day he surprises us each week with new vocabulary, he loves his teachers and school! Every teacher is so welcoming and kind, I couldn't recommend a better school, It has exceeded our expectations! Our son really loves the learning environment. He's able to be independent and chose the activity he wants to do in class. He also enjoys the class activities that the teachers set up. It's really nice to get photo updates at the end of the week showing all the students together doing their activities! Such a great school!

Gr. 2 (current) — Re-locating from out west, we were searching for a school that had a smaller class size, diverse staff and student body, strong academics, and extra-curricular. We found that at Ashwood Glen. The head of school was our first contact with the school and we were immediately impressed with her level of engagement with us as parents, and her care and attention to our daughter. She helped ease her transition to a new school community and deftly dealt with any questions that arose. The staff and teachers are very caring about their students and work to ensure comprehension of the materials they are teaching, even if it means spending some extra time working one-on-one as much as possible. Our daughter responded really well to this environment and it has certainly helped to prepare her for future growth. Ashwood Glen has a wonderful student body with lots of very supportive parents. Continued investment in teachers and student recruitment, particularly in elementary will be key moving forward.

Nursery/Toddler (current) — My daughter loves Ashwood Glen, her teachers, and working in the classrooms. She has attended Ashwood for 18 months and has blossomed as she's almost 4. She likes to go see her friends, teachers, and staff and likes the after-school programs offered. She is very proud of her school and loves to show us around every time we go to an event there. She particularly loves the library and chooses her book weekly. She gets excited that they do concerts, and talent shows and have family event days that she gets to spend with her family, friends, and teachers. She enjoys writing and learning new things from her teachers. She then gets excited to bring home new words in French or at the moment Spanish as her class is learning about Argentina. Overall, she enjoys all aspects of this school.
