What Branksome Hall says about their university placement record and services:

  • Choosing a university is a match to be made and not a prize to be won. At Branksome Hall, the Guidance and University counselling team prides itself on providing individualised support for our girls through the university exploration and application process. Postsecondary planning begins in Grade 10 with the Careers Studies course, and carries through the Diploma 1 and 2 (Grade 11 and 12) years. We encourage students to discover the best university fit for them, through one-on-one counselling, exploration of postsecondary resources, writing clinics, application workshops, student-parent information evenings, and annual visits from over 80 university representatives. The enrichment offered through the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate program offered at Branksome Hall, enhances the girls’ educational experience, thoroughly preparing our students for the demands of university programs, and providing multiple avenues for girls to explore their passion for service learning, athletics and well-being, and creativity. Given their rich academic and co-curricular experiences, it is no surprise that Branksome girls are admitted to, and thrive at, a wide variety of top universities and programs in Canada and globally.

Preparation through the IB Programme is exceptionally effective.

Observations from students, parents, and alumni highlight that Branksome Hall's IB program and rigorous academics provide a strong foundation for university, equipping graduates with advanced knowledge, skills, and confidence.

The IB program really helped me get ahead and on-track for university, so I’m really appreciative for that, both in content and the study habits that I developed through the IB. ... The Number One thing that I appreciate about my experience at Branksome Hall is the education.
The IB program is one thing that differentiates Branksome Hall from other private schools. I know that very few independent schools in Toronto offer it. Especially the support to do the IB is a unique thing that Branksome provides. I don’t want to say it’s expected, but it’s a natural streamline from Grades 9 and 10 at Branksome to go into the IB program. Having them scaffold the curriculum in Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 to go into the IB, I think that’s really unique. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have studied in the IB program because I think it prepared me for university.
Branksome Hall shaped my hard skills, like my study habits. Branksome definitely shaped that. And that has really given me a great foundation to go into university. The level that people are practicing subjects at—for example, ‘Theory of Knowledge’ in the IB program, being able to think in a way that is more theoretical and higher level—that has helped me as well in the university setting.

The preparation is balanced through dedicated counselling.

Insights from students, alumni, and administrators underscore Branksome Hall’s nurturing environment and specialized university counseling services, which collectively foster personal growth and build the confidence necessary for successful university placements.

Drama was never really a part of my life until I went to Branksome Hall.  I moved to Branksome  in Grade 8. Before that year, I wasn’t planning on taking drama—I was planning on taking Art and that was going to be it. But in Grade 8 at Branksome, you had to take Music, Art, and Drama. And I was like ‘Whatever, I have to take Drama, whatever’. And then we did one unit, the Monologue unit, which was the main acting unit, and I absolutely fell in love. The teacher was just amazing, and I still talk to her today. Then I took drama the next year, and I wanted just to make it a part of my life. So that teacher worked with me at least once a week at lunch and just helped me with my acting skills and would film me and research stuff for me and help me write, like, résumés or cover letters, which was awesome. Branksome Hall definitely influenced my choice to take Drama at university because it wouldn’t have even crossed my mind to do something like this.
As a Grade 11 student, I walked into my guidance counselor's office and proudly announced all the universities I wanted to apply to. I had schools that were "safety" schools, some "reach" schools, and some in the middle of the two. I was expecting her to tell me I was applying to too many or I was delusional for wanting to apply to some of these universities, but instead, she nodded, and she put me in touch with some Branksome alums who attended or were attending some of the schools for me to chat with. I know that the process has evolved at Branksome since I graduated, with counselors who solely work in the university counseling program, which I think is fabulous. While the counseling has always been great, this is just another example of Branksome providing the best resources for the students, even after they graduate.
The guidance counsellor department was very supportive. We could book meetings at any time and any day to go over whatever we wanted and were encouraged to ask as many questions as we had. I have heard that Branksome has enlisted more university counsellors. From the feedback from my peers currently attending Branksome and seeing their results being able to get into incredible schools, I believe the new team is exceptional in their ability to support students. The results speak for themselves I think, and Branksome's decision to separate University and Guidance Counselors was a perfect way to improve that process for students.

Having a culture of academic excellence benefits students.

Feedback from former students highlights that Branksome Hall fosters an environment of academic excellence where striving for high grades and continuous improvement is deeply ingrained in the school's culture.

I think the lessons and things that I’ve learned at Branksome have really laid the foundation for me going forward into university. If I could give an analogy, it reminds me of the starting blocks in track and field. That’s what Branksome has become for me now — a great way for me to push off into the rest of life.
The one thing that I recognized, that I came away with from Branksome, was a real sense of confidence. When I arrived at university, I was in a program that was quite male-dominated, and I remember being in lecture theaters with 500 people, and I had the confidence to put up my hand if I didn’t understand what was being discussed by the professor, in front of all those people. I remember sitting there thinking ‘I never would have had the confidence to speak up—and to question things, and to ask questions—if I had not had that experience at Branksome’, building up my confidence.
I think if you’re a prospective family, I would say it’s a no-brainer to go to Branksome. If you look at our academic results compared to the IB Programme grade average globally, ours is far higher. If you look at our OSSD grades, they’re materially higher than average. If you look at the fact that almost all of our girls do go to university, that they all get accepted to university, that’s a pretty amazing statistic. Many of them go to the best universities in the world. Many of them get scholarships to go to the best universities in Canada, in the U.S., and the U.K. So if you judge a school by what kind of graduates it produces, and what those graduates go on to do, I think the proof is in the pudding.
