(5) Student Experience
I really love The Prestige School. It has a very friendly and close-knit environment, and the small classrooms allow the students to ask any questions and have personal help from the teachers if needed. There is not much I would like to change about the school since I am satisfied with my experience for 10 years. All the students at school are very friendly and supportive and are willing to help each other if needed. The teachers make sure students are prepared for their post-secondary education and will not be too overwhelmed with the workload and testing. There are lots of activities available at the school, including sports like basketball, soccer, volleyball, and table tennis, and other clubs like student council, DECA, and debate.
(5) School Leadership
Yes, I respect the school leaders since I can see that they are all working very hard and trying their best to teach the students and prepare them for all the tests, assignments, and exams. They always support students and answer all questions if needed until the material is understood, which is very helpful. The teachers are very organized and prepare lesson plans for every lesson as well as learning goals and success criteria. The guidance counsellor is very supportive and ready to help with any issues.
(5) Teaching
I think that the teachers at the school set high expectations for the students, which is really good since they want to ensure that the students really understand the material to the core. There is a lot of work to do during class and at home, which builds discipline, but it can also be overwhelming at times. This deep knowledge we get is very useful for our education after high school. The teachers make their expectations clear by posting the learning goals and outlines and telling us what topics to focus on for the upcoming tests. When the teachers talk about success, I think they do imagine it for us because they want to help each student achieve what they want in life and will work on any student's question about a topic.
(5) Academics
I think the work is a reasonable level of difficulty since there are sometimes large amounts of it. Still, it makes sure we understand the topics and builds a sense of discipline and responsibility for the students. I am doing all the courses I will need for my post-secondary education, so what I am learning will be useful for me. However, I think some courses will be useful for our lives as well, for instance, our civics and careers course opened our minds to our future jobs and how to prepare for interviews. Another example is the biology courses I am currently taking, which teach us about the human body and certain diseases and causes, which I think is very useful.
(5) Extracurriculars
In my years of school, I have participated in many activities. I have attended the DECA club for the last 3 years at the school, this year being the president. I think DECA is a very important club which teaches a lot of life skills and business skills for students to use in the future, no matter what career path they choose. I have been on the student council for a couple of years as well, and I really enjoy planning and executing a lot of activities and parties for the school. Our group of student council is very dedicated to making school life fun, and we have the support of our student council leader and other teachers. I have also participated on a volleyball team where we would play every lunch. This year, our school has included many more clubs, like the yearbook club, and I think all students will find something to do that they enjoy.
(5) Students
The students are very nice and supportive. I have met many wonderful friends at this school whom I believe I will keep in contact with for the rest of my life. The students are very dedicated and hard-working and are always there to help out each other if needed, for example, by explaining the topics and helping prepare for the tests. To me, the environment feels like a close-knit and friendly town where everyone knows each other. I think that the students who pay attention in class and try their best to do all their work on time are the ones who do the best in the classes. On the other hand, the students who do not try typically end up not doing their best.
(5) School Life
I would first choose to tour the outdoor area of our school, which is very large in size, has a basketball field, soccer field, a huge empty plain to walk around, and a playground area. Every age group of students could find something to do there. I would then give a tour of the classrooms where the students are hard at work on various topics, including mathematics, languages like English, French, Russian, and sciences like computer science, chemistry, biology, physics, and more. Many different topics are being taught at the school, and some very knowledgeable teachers relay the information very well. The next place I would tour is the gym, where there is always a fun activity going on, whether the students are playing a game of basketball, volleyball, or some game organized by the student council.
(5) Community
Yes, this school feels like home to me. Over the past years, I feel like I grew up with the students in my class, and it feels like a family. The guidance counsellor in our school is very nice, and she looks to help us academically and with personal issues and if we need help thinking about what to do in the future. The other teachers are also very friendly and ready to help with any problems we may have. Every teacher figure in the school is always looking to make sure we are succeeding in our studies and have a plan and goals for the future ready to work towards. We can always come to the guidance councillor and receive help if there is any issue.
(5) School Location
The school is located in a very friendly and safe area, and there are many plazas around the school for students to go off campus for lunch or after school. For instance, in the Shepard Plaza, there are many places to buy food in case students forget their lunch, or it’s a nice place to relax and have fun with their classmates. A bus stop is very close to the school, so students can use public transportation to get to school or back home.
(5) Admissions
Since I was very young, my parents had done the admission process when I joined. However, it seems very simple, and I would recommend calling the guidance councillor and talking to her about the child who would like to be enrolled. Through the conversation, there will be much more information told to the parents and they can decide whether it’s the right fit. For me, the process of going to a new school was scary at first, but it turned out to be really fun quickly, and I really enjoyed it.
