The big picture on TEAM School

We summarized the school ourselves

Mentor College and the TEAM schools (Tutorial and Educational Assistance in Mississauga) are closely associated. They are overseen by a single administrative body, and they share some facilities, services, and extracurricular programs. The most obvious difference between them is focus: where Mentor College provides a program for students proceeding within the academic stream, and the TEAM providing a program for those proceeding within the applied stream. That said, it's the other differences—including style of instruction, class size, and individual attention—that ultimately distinguish the schools. Many students arrive at TEAM after struggling to meet their true academic potential within a more traditional academic setting. The ideal student is one who will benefit from the added support and attention, with particular attention to numeracy, literacy, and the development of sound learning skills. The facilities are modern and robust, as are student services and transportation.

We questioned the school adminstration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Since 1981, TEAM School has offered an individualized academic programme for students who benefit from the additional support that can be provided in a small class setting. In the TEAM programme (up to 9 students), teachers utilize Direct Instruction strategies and programmes in core subject areas to build skill mastery. The TEAM Programme provides an excellent academic upgrading programme where fundamental skills are consolidated. The TEAM Preparatory (Prep) programme (up to 5 students) provides further support through a smaller class size and individualized programme. Students work toward skill acquisition with emphasis on the integration of personal skills and work habits for individual success and a greater level of independence. The academic programme is augmented by specialty classes in science, physical education, music, and the performing arts."

My son came to Team from a French Immersion school in the TDSB. He was falling far behind. He started Grade 4 at Team School and transitioned beautifully. The staff is outstanding. The compassion and encouragement they put forth were priceless. The max class size is 8, which gave him the opportunity to learn in a calm environment. To accommodate the students' individual levels they were broken up into sub-classes and worked at the level they were at. No student is left behind. When you are ready for the next level, they move you up. While at Team my son developed a strong work ethic and sense of self. Speech nights and clubs helped him socially. They even offer bus-ing!
