As an extracurricular-afterschool virtual program, Young People's Writing Room is specifically for high school youth interested to develop scripts for theatre and/or film. They will work and share ideas in a small group (7 max.), crafting a professional script. They will experience the detailed process of character and story development over the period of 8 weeks. In the end, they can use the learned tools to generate their own scripts in the future. Participants are not expected to do the day-to-day writing labor required to produce the scripts, which is the task of The Aakowa Parables Inc., but participants will rather generate the ideas and edit the story as it unfolds.

The process of creating a story is an exercise that allows us to analyze our own beliefs and thoughts through the characters and plots we create. With this program, participants are given the platform to express their own truths about the world in a healthy manner among their peers. As a group, they will attempt to create a theatrical or film masterpiece! The finished script will potentially be produced by The Aakowa Parables Inc. and showcased in live theatrical event called Theatre Masterminds - features multiple skits followed by discussion.

Registration Details
To register, go to: www.aakowa.com/youth-program. This is a year-round extracurricular-afterschool virtual program for those interested. Group sizes are kept small (max. 7) to allow for every participant to be heard with their ideas for the theatrical or film script created. Writing Room sessions are conveniently online over the period of 8 weeks. Pay in 4 installments of $75, with option to cancel after second installment. After you sign up, you will receive an email with our intake form to gather information about the participant. It will also include start dates and proposed schedule for virtual sessions.

Director's Message
Young People's Writing Room stems from the mission to use storytelling as a tool of self-reflection, inspiration, creativity. In the process of story development, we start with a simple question: "What do you want to talk about?" From there, pointed questions and healthy discussions continue to allow each youth to create characters, plot and ideas that reflect their natural view of the world. It's exciting for them to see how their theatrical or film script comes together. Without really noticing, participants discover more about themselves as they analyze the story. They shine light on areas of their thinking that they never considered before, while also creating a story that their family, friends and the public can benefit from. In a time when the world is throwing many challenges at us, teens especially will find this exercise supports their mental health. They are given the platform to share and connect with their peers, building something meaningful that will last forever. In the end, there is a sense of accomplishment that builds self-esteem that they can carry with them to other areas of their life, and especially if interested to pursue a career as writer, director or actor for theatre or film.
As a company, The Aakowa Parables Inc. will produce select scripts with live theatre or film, submitting to film festivals, and/or presenting on the aakowa.com online platform. Participants will be given full writing credits.
Staff and Counsellors
As the program host, Aakowa is a actively working professional writer & director who has worked extensively with several youth organizations and groups throughout his career, including Covenant House, Stella's Place, Horizons for Youth, Route to Roots and various middle-school and high school classrooms.
