    Troubled teens camps are just one option among a rapidly expanding roster of special needs camps. Depending on your child’s unique needs, abilities, and interests, you might also look into some other options.

    Teen boot camps: focus on fitness, discipline, and structure in a military-like environment

    Fitness boot camps: focus on fitness for kids who need to lose weight and get in shape

    Martial arts camps: teach one or more martial arts, such as karate or taekwondo, which can breed discipline and patience

    Adventure camps: give kids an opportunity to challenge themselves physically and mentally through a variety of exciting and high-octane activities

    Wilderness trip camps: offer trips into the wilderness, with fully trained counsellors, to help kids deepen their appreciation of nature

    After school programs for troubled teens: offer challenging and growth-oriented opportunities with instructors trained in supporting struggling youth. 

    Overnight camps for struggling teens offer immersive weeklong (or longer) programs that facilitate change and growth, often in rural locations that promote a deepened renewal.

    Troubled teens

    While all teens experience some growing pains, for some, these years are a particularly difficult adjustment. Troubled teens experience problems that go beyond the norm. Their problems tend to be more intense, persistent, and can lead to unpredictable behaviour.

    Most troubled teens have problems at school and at home, as well as in their peer and family relationships. Many also develop serious emotional or behavioural disorders during adolescence:

    • Criminal behaviour
    • Violent behaviour
    • Suicidal tendencies

    What camps for troubled teens have to offer

    Troubled teen camps, also known as “therapeutic camps,” are intended to help. They offer specialized programs for teens or youth who struggle with one or more of these serious issues.

    Some troubled teen camps focus on one particular kind of disorder or issue, such as anxiety or ODD. Others provide support for a wide range of issues.

    But, what kind of support do these camps offer? This, of course, will depend on the particular kinds of behavioural and emotional issues the camp specializes in.

    But in general, camps for troubled teens tend to offer a diverse range of programs and services. These are meant to support and benefit teens and youth who are really struggling with life.

    Questions to ask troubled teen camps

    Each camp will have its own focus and areas of expertise. Keep this in mind as you’re searching for the right camp for your troubled child. In making your choice, you should also consider your child's age, gender, personality, challenges, disorders, interests, abilities, and more.

    To find the right troubled teen camp for your child, you’ll need to look at your options closely. Make a shortlist of troubled teen camps, visit them in person, and ask lots of questions. 

    Here are some questions to get you started:

    • What kinds of troubled teens do you work with?
    • Do you specialize in certain types of troubled teens?
    • What is your approach to dealing with troubled teens?
    • What kinds of tasks and activities do you offer?
    • What does a typical look like?
    • Who are your staff and what are their qualifications?
    • Do you offer individual and/or group counselling?
    • What kinds of medical facilities do you have?
    • How do you deal with discipline?
    • What kinds of rules and consequences do you have?

    Choosing a camp

    Choosing the right camp is no small task. There are many kinds of camps, including those supporting special needs such as troubled teen behaviour. Each has its own focus, approach, and goals. It’s best to get the lay of the land before you choose one. One way to do so is through the Our Kids camp expo, held in Toronto each winter.
