Contexte – trouble d'hyperactivité avec déficit de l'attention (THADA TDA)
Selon les statistiques colligées par la National Institute of Mental Health aux États-Unis, le ratio d'élèves atteints d'un THADA peut être aussi élevé que 1 sur 20. Le trouble se caractérise par une durée d'attention affaiblie ou réduite, une difficulté à se concentrer, l'impulsivité et même les comportements nuisibles. Dans les générations passées, les parents peuvent avoir connu une frustration en raison des comportements liés au THADA, en pensant que l'enfant « s'entêtait » ou « s'emportait ».
Certains ont même pu les considérer à tort comme étant « stupides », bien que les recherches révèlent que les enfants atteints de THADA sont vraisemblablement dotés d'une intelligence supérieure à la moyenne.
Il est fortement conseillé de trouver la meilleure école pour travailler avec les THADA, car les enfants atteints de THADA peuvent prendre davantage de retard au niveau scolaire et souffrir d'une moins bonne estime de soi s'ils ne sont pas introduits dans un milieu attentionné et efficace. Plus ils demeurent longtemps dans un milieu qui est mal organisé pour gérer les THADA, plus ils seront à risque d'expérimenter avec les drogues, l'alcool et l'« automédication », ou de développer des « comportements à risque ».
