Our Reggio Emilia approach in the early years focuses on developing the whole child—academically, emotionally, and socially. We provide an enriched, balanced curriculum with a focus on core academics, as well as music, art, and drama. Our teachers are facilitators and mentors, encouraging critical thought and self-reflection, while also promoting cooperative and independent learning. Our Preparatory Program in Grades 6–8 gives special attention to soft skills needed for success in Upper School as well as university—students learn organization, self-advocacy, note-taking, study skills, collaboration, and communication. Our Grade 9 and 10 students benefit from a supervised study period every day during the first two semesters, as well as tailored workshops to further support effective work habits.

    In our Primary grades, Science is inquiry-based. Most lessons focus on acquiring skills and knowledge through hands-on experiences. In our Elementary grades (5 - 8) Hudson utilizes Equal Balance teaching practices, hands-on experimentation and supports direct-instruction of scientific theory. Formal lab report writing is utilized in preparation for high school science. The Upper School Science program at Hudson follows an equal balance approach, with equal emphasis placed on inquiry-based learning and on knowledge acquisition through a variety of instructional methods. The Ontario Curriculum is covered thoroughly; areas of general interest to the students are explored in greater detail. Experiments are thoughtfully designed to enrich the students’ learning and give experience with instrumentation, procedures and lab reporting skills that will be utilized in their futures beyond Hudson.     This is characterized by having extreme difficulty understanding what is heard and expressing what one wants to say. These disorders affect the area of the brain that controls language processing.
    Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NLD)
    These involve difficulties interpreting non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language. They're usually characterized by a significant discrepancy between higher verbal skills and weaker motor, visual-spatial, and social skills.
    Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit
    A characteristic seen in people with learning disabilities such as Dysgraphia or Non-verbal LD. It can result in missing subtle differences in shapes or printed letters, losing place frequently, struggles with cutting, holding pencil too tightly, or poor eye/hand coordination.

    Autism
    Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).
    Asperger's Syndrome
    On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.
    Down syndrome
    his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.
    Intellectual disability
    This is a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning (e.g., reasoning, learning, and problem solving). Intellectual disabilities are also known as general learning disabilities (and used to be referred to as a kind of mental retardation).
    Williams syndrome
    This is a rare genetic disorder present at birth. It is characterized by intellectual disabilities or learning problems, unique facial features, and cardiovascular problems.
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. These may include growth deficits, facial anomalies, and damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to cognitive, behavioural, and other problems.

    Troubled behaviour / troubled teens
    roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. This can lead to behavioural and emotional issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behaviour, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
    Clinical Depression
    This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life.
    Clinical anxiety
    This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror.
    Suicidal thoughts
    This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life.
    Drug and alcohol abuse
    This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning.
    Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
    This is a disruptive behavioural disorder which normally involves angry outbursts, often directed at people of authority. This behaviour must last continuously for six months or more and significantly interfere with daily functioning.

    This is a condition of the central nervous system. It affects the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Symptoms can include fatigue, loss of motor control, memory loss, depression, and cognitive difficulties.
    Cerebral palsy
    his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.
    Muscular dystrophy
    Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals.
    Spina Bifida
    This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine.
    Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
    This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.
    Blindness
    Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness."
    Deafness
    Hearing impairment, also known as "hearing loss," is a partial or total inability to hear. The degree of hearing impairment varies between people. It can range from complete hearing loss (or deafness) to partial hearing loss (meaning the ears can pick up some sounds).
    Cystic Fibrosis
    Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited genetic condition, which affects the body's respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. It affects young children and adults.

One of the Hudson College parents said to me last year, ‘you’re everything that a public school should be.’ I thought it was an inspired comment. That was the original intention of the school. What she meant by that was the level of care, the level of inclusiveness, the level of nourishment — looking at a child individually, asking what are their strengths, what are their weaknesses, and what can we, as Hudson College, do to help them academically, while enriching their whole experience with clubs and activities.
Parents send their children to Hudson College if they’re looking for a school that believes in balance. We consciously look at balance, and we do that both philosophically and practically. We operate on an elementary, eight-day schedule. Math and English may happen every day, because they form the core of the program, but all the other subjects, those will be balanced over the course of eight days, through the whole year.
Parents are drawn to Hudson College because we really look individually at a child. We look at their particular strengths, but then also look for where they need help. A good example is Math. We’ve seen that many students who come to us have gaps in Math. If you’re not learning the foundational elements of Math as a young student, there’s a compounding effect as you get to the older grades. So how can we correct that path?

The teachers are dedicated and supportive.

Observations from students, parents, and alumni highlight that the dedication and supportiveness of the teaching staff at Hudson College play a critical role in facilitating student success and personal growth.

The biggest reason that someone should choose Hudson College would just be the teachers. The teachers are so supportive. They help you through any issues you’re having with classwork, and they are always there to help you. In math, sometimes I struggled with my homework, and I would go and sit with a math teacher after school for an hour, and he would help me work through the problems and think everything through. That was something I didn’t really have before coming to Hudson, and I think that’s definitely a big reason to go, just the support the teachers give you.
We really appreciate how both of our kids are challenged. All of their teachers, it seems like they really get to know our kids and find what really motivates them. That allows them to really push our kids to their limits, so they can write a better paper, or solve the harder math questions.
When we visited Hudson College, we were just impressed. It was a small school, and it seemed family-oriented, but everything that we were hoping for in a school, we got it. We met a current student, who was honest about everything: He told us about how there’s a lot of homework at Hudson, and how they support you, and how they’re very structured.

The flexible semester system helps students.

Insights from the school community reveal that Hudson College’s unique three-semester system offers both flexibility and intensity, allowing students to focus deeply on fewer subjects at a time while balancing their workload effectively.

Within the structure of the semester system, the fact that the day is built to accommodate a study period every day is really smart, because it means that there's time to do homework and assignments. But there's also time to collaborate with your peers and to go and get help from a teacher if that's something that you need.
The semester system that Hudson has is one that is very different to other schools. At Hudson it's basically exactly how it would be in university. While other schools might have a semester system, it's broken up in ways that don't really follow the university education. At university the first semester is all of the fall, where it goes until winter break, and then after winter break it goes until April, which was the same as Hudson. And then the final semester within Hudson would replicate like summer semesters that would be held within the university.
What I would say families would find most surprising about Hudson is the amount of choice that the students are given when they're going into high school. Starting from Grade 9 all the way through Grade 12, you got to pursue what you wanted to do and weren't necessarily forced to do anything that you didn't really want to do other than certain required courses during certain years. After a little while, it was all up to you.

Exceptional resources facilitate experiential and collaborative learning.

Things like all STEM equipment they have, or how they have a big focus on collaborative discussions in class. These are all different tools that Hudson College is using. Or the laptop program. Hudson has so many things that make it a bit unique compared to other schools.
If I was asked to give a tour, I would take the visitors into the science classrooms or my math classroom. I love all my classes, but science and math are special to me, and what my career goals are. I feel these rooms are decorated with the best things: posters and diagrams showcasing the student’s work, graphing art in the math classrooms, science equipment and models… It is where I study my favourite subjects!

Learning experiences are engaging and relevant.

I think Hudson has chosen to focus on students in an extremely creative way. They really prioritize each student’s success, instead of doing things the cookie-cutter way. I think you need that to really create change, because I don’t think the education system is incredible as it is — I think it’s kind of barbaric in a lot of ways, and I really love when I see high schools coming up with new ways to do things.
Hudson College’s goals in terms of school improvement are usually in terms of [curriculum]. … For example, Hudson College has a lot of budding scientists. We actively promote a very rigorous science curriculum. We want it to be extremely hands-on and experiential because we think students learn scientific principles best that way. I could see us hopefully developing larger robotics teams one day because we do robotics with them when they’re young.
There have been times that I have remarked "I would love to go back to the 7th grade!" The teachers, while certainly adhering to the curriculum make learning fun, an adventure and give it real world applications and relevance. We have never had our kids say "why am I learning this?" Not that they don't complain - the do! About homework, tests etc. If they didn't, I would be concerned. Whether it is teaching the real world complexities of geo politics by creating a universe of planets that makes trade, immigration and defense issues interesting to music where the choir is learning a top 40 hit - the teachers are continually looking to find ways of keeping the students engaged. Our kids are challenged. Rewarded with success and encouraged to not give up when they fail.

Students build confidence through incremental success.

Hudson College prepares the child for whatever the child wants to create for himself or herself in the future. From my experience and my understanding as a mother and as a teacher, the public system is set up for making a person literate, like functional. But Hudson College is very committed to what's next for them.
Math is very tied to your self-esteem.  … What we’re trying to do at Hudson College is not about turning every child into a mathematician or an engineer. We know that math is going to be a skill that you need — you basically can’t drop Math in high school any longer — so we aim to get students feeling strong enough in mathematical skills that it doesn’t become a stigma for them later on.
I think Hudson College gave me a very well-rounded education, which I definitely appreciated a lot coming into university. At Hudson College, I was able to push myself quite rigorously with my academics—which is something that can be a bit difficult when you’re a high-school student. But after becoming a university student, I realized it has helped me greatly. I went through my first year and obviously, it was hard, but Hudson College definitely prepared me for it really, really well. So I am very grateful for that.
