Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

The rigorous academic program produces results.

Observations from students, alumni, and parents highlight that Hudson College's rigorous academic programs and unique tri-semester system provide strong preparation for university challenges and teach essential time management skills.

When I started at university, I had a lot of friends who were shocked when they found out they had to do so much reading every week, because they didn’t go to a semestered school. But that was just something that I was used to after Hudson — it wasn’t a surprise to me.
I think Hudson College gave me a very well-rounded education, which I definitely appreciated a lot coming into university. At Hudson College, I was able to push myself quite rigorously with my academics—which is something that can be a bit difficult when you’re a high-school student. But after becoming a university student, I realized it has helped me greatly. I went through my first year and obviously, it was hard, but Hudson College definitely prepared me for it really, really well. So I am very grateful for that.
The semester system that Hudson has is one that is very different to other schools. At Hudson it's basically exactly how it would be in university. While other schools might have a semester system, it's broken up in ways that don't really follow the university education. At university the first semester is all of the fall, where it goes until winter break, and then after winter break it goes until April, which was the same as Hudson. And then the final semester within Hudson would replicate like summer semesters that would be held within the university.

Students receive personalized guidance.

Comments from parents and students reveal that Hudson College offers remarkable access to guidance counselors who provide thorough, personalized support, helping students make informed decisions about university and navigate their application processes with confidence.

That whole process of trying to figure out where you're going to go to university or what to apply for can be incredibly intimidating and scary and just discouraging. We've already been in touch with the wonderful guidance staff at Hudson and talked about what that might look like next year and she helped begin the course selection process for Grade 12 and open up what those courses could lead to as far as undergrad and what schools might be best. And I don't think that dialogue is readily available in other schools. I know for a fact, talking to other parents in larger public schools, that access to guidance counselors is hard to get and so there isn't that sort of rudder to help you navigate through the process.
I thought that the guidance consuellor, Ms. Wise, was very good with the university application process. She gave some website resources to start looking at colleges and universities, before grade 12, to see what I might want to go into, since I didn't really have a clear vision of what schools or programs I want to go into. She started the application process well in advance, to let the students see a variety of universities with the university fairs on specific days and made sure everyone was present. She set aside specific days for a few students to set up their OUAC accounts, so that they were able to accept offers, when offered and advised students to apply for three or more programs if even you knew which one you wanted to go to. She sent emails to check up on your progress and to tell specific details for accepting offers. She sent out university information if you needed to contact them in any way.
My experience at Hudson College has been nothing but wonderful. Coming from a rather large school with upwards of 1800 kids, the transition couldn't have been smoother. From the first few seconds I entered the school everyone was welcoming and supportive. Hudson has endless support to offer in areas such as university, program choices, and personal support. I personally love the structure and feeling that Hudson provides you with on a daily basis. Throughout my past two years at the school I've been beyond content with my experience. When I come to school every day I feel as if I'm walking into my second home. My fellow classmates and students are always smiling, happy, and engaging.
