Summer camps that support blind or vision-impaired kids and teens

Camps for kids who are blind or visually impaired are designed with an understanding of the specific needs of these kids. Blind camps or visually impaired camps adapt programs, facilities and activities specifically for the needs of these children so they can fully enjoy summer camp living. These provide an ideal summer pastime for children who are either totally blind, legally blind, partially sighted with low vision of 20-40 on the Snellen chart or who have vision in one eye only.     Camps for the blind offer experienced staff trained in Braille, orientation and mobility. Camps offer skilled counselors and nurses present throughout the camping experience. Particular attention is paid to the unique needs of each child at a camp of this type. Typical summer camp activities include swimming, boating, hiking, arts and crafts, fishing, woodworking, music, sports, rock wall climbing, leadership games, canoeing and much more.

    Computers are a great tool for blind children and adults. Blind Camps offer computer training in a simulated class room environment and teach campers to effectively use assistive tools. They are taught skills which include the use of special tools to carry out tasks like word processing, data entry, browsing and much more.

    Camps for blind children let them explore special abilities and potential. Such activities develop confidence in campers and allow them to be on par with normally sighted school children. Camps special for blind kids give them the opportunity to learn several vital skills toward leading a normal life. These camps offer education, recreation, treatment and socialization for the visually challenged and help them develop their full potential. The diversity of experiences helps in developing considerable sense of worth and independence for visually challenged children.
