What are the benefits of singing camps?

Gain confidence. Singing in front of anyone–whether it be a large crowd or your instructor–can be nerve-wracking and bring up feelings of vulnerability. At singing camp, instructors help kids recognize their natural talent. Coaching strategies empower them to overcome fears and anxieties. The personal growth that comes with conquering fears is invaluable, and will set your child on a track toward maturity. At singing camp, your child’s inner star can shine in a safe and supportive environment.

Tailored camp experience. Camps listed here offer a wide range of activities within the field of song and performance. You can enroll your child in a program that best suits their needs and desires. Camps include online and in-person offerings, one-on-one vocal lessons or ensemble group performance camps, pop- group or musical theatre focused, voice acting camps, and more! Kids can focus on their favourite music genres, styles and songs, ensuring they have a positive, individualized experience that will cultivate their passion for singing.

Learn from professionals. Singing camps are taught by trained vocal professionals. Not only does this mean kids learn from the best, they learn from people who have been in their shoes. All vocalists have had to overcome their own performance fears and anxieties, and find inner strength and resilience to make it to where they are today. This will no doubt be a motivating factor for your child, as they will have an empathetic role model to look up to.

Find your own distinct style. When we hear a new song on the radio and we know who the singer is, that's because every musical artist has their own distinct style. In singing camp, kids have the opportunity to try out different genres and styles and find their special niche. This means kids may have to find the courage to try new things. They'll push the boundaries of their comfort zone, and risk sounding ‘funny’ while experimenting with using their voice in new ways. This experience will teach them to value difference and help them mature artistically and personally.

Open to all ages and abilities. It can be said that music is a universal language. Everyone can find joy in music, no matter their age, culture, ethnicity or abilities. That is why the camps listed here offer a wide range of programs tailored to specific needs. There are parent-baby rhyme time camps, preschool aged camps, camps for kids with special needs or those that are differently-abled. Singing camp incorporates age-appropriate activities designed to engage your child, from musical-story times puppet shows, to camps that incorporate percussion instruments.

What will your child learn in singing lessons?

The art of performing. If your child has been bitten by the performance bug, singing camp is the perfect place to let it shine! At camp, kids learn how to put together an engaging performance, combining song with music, emotion and choreography. Kids have the opportunity to channel their emotions through performance, express themselves, and connect with their audience. Even if your child is not a born performer, exposing them to this can help them learn confidence and presentation skills. They take this into the classroom and future workplaces.

Aural skills. Aural skills, also called ear training, is a vital component to musical training. It focuses on identifying pitch, chords, intonation, intervals, and other musical elements by ear. Kids learn how to project their voice, listening to and adjusting their pitch and intonation while singing. A huge aspect of becoming a skilled musician is developing a sharp musical ear, picking up on the music you hear.

The basics of singing. Whether your child is a star-to-be, or already a superstar singer in their own right, camps cover the fundamentals of singing, beginning with basics and progressing to more advanced theory. Instructors will focus on building your child’s range and flexibility. They also teach harmony, melody, rhythm, sightreading, breathwork, and more. Kid learn the importance of warming up, vocal exercises, and developing healthy vocal habits.

Musical literacy. Musical literacy refers, broadly, to the ability to read, write and play music. In the process of learning the basics of vocal work, kids improve their musical literacy. They learn how to identify and name music beats and notes with letters, as well as understand common music vocabulary. By the end of camp, kids will be able to discuss and analyze a musical piece with proper terminology, beyond noting whether they liked it or didn’t like it.

Musical composition. Through singing camp, kids learn the structure of a song or musical piece, and the process of creating a new musical number, considering the relevant elements such as lyrics, chords and melody. Some music camps offer songwriting as an additional component. This gives your child further opportunity to creatively express themselves, and experiment with their own unique musical style.
