Handpicked excerpts

There are few schools in Toronto's private school landscape quite like Metropolitan Preparatory Academy (MetroPrep). Founded in 1982, MetroPrep offers a forward-thinking, dynamic environment that prepares students not just for post-secondary education, but for life in a rapidly evolving world. While some traditional private schools emphasize hierarchy and convention, MetroPrep stands apart by valuing creativity, individuality, leadership, and innovation—all while maintaining rigorous academic standards.

MetroPrep is entering an exciting chapter of growth, with a major expansion underway at its 1 Duncan Mill Road campus in North York. The school is set to occupy the entire 65,000 square foot building, located on a 3.65-acre property surrounded by green space and close to major transit routes. Plans include a new, state-of-the-art gymnasium, breaking ground in summer 2025, as well as expanded science labs, art studios, performing arts spaces, and biotechnology labs to support MetroPrep’s unique STEM programming.

Learning environments

Learning at MetroPrep extends far beyond textbooks and tests. Classrooms are designed to foster dialogue, collaboration, and critical inquiry. Students engage in debates, Socratic seminars, hands-on projects, interdisciplinary research, and problem-solving challenges. Whether it is a science lab experiment, a humanities roundtable, or a group business presentation, MetroPrep students are constantly applying their knowledge in real-world contexts.

Technology is seamlessly integrated into the learning experience. Students have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, computer science resources, and media tools that enhance research, creativity, and innovation. Every student receives personalized academic support when needed, ensuring that no one is left behind—and no one is held back.

Teachers

At the heart of Metropolitan Preparatory Academy’s success is an extraordinary team of educators—teachers who are not only experts in their fields, but also passionate mentors who invest deeply in each student’s journey.

"We do not just teach subjects—we teach people," says Principal Ryan Seeley. "Our teachers are mentors, coaches, advocates, and role models. They help students discover who they are and who they can become."

MetroPrep’s faculty is carefully chosen not only for academic credentials but for their passion for teaching and their ability to form strong, trusting relationships with students.

Every teacher at MetroPrep is an expert in their subject area, often with advanced degrees, deeply committed to personalized education, skilled at differentiating instruction to meet diverse learning needs, actively involved in extracurricular activities, athletics, and student life.

Signature programs

“We believe students are capable of extraordinary things when given the right tools and the right opportunities,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “The GENIUS Program was built to give young people an authentic, university-level experience with biotechnology, years ahead of their peers.”

Vice Principal Joanna Johnson adds, “Biotech is not the future—it’s the present. Our students are stepping into fields like genetics, forensics, and molecular biology, and they’re doing real lab work, not just learning from a textbook.”

The GENIUS Program, focused on biotechnology, has quickly become a deciding factor for many families choosing MetroPrep over other private schools. Parents value the opportunity for their children to engage meaningfully with biotechnology, innovation, and advanced scientific thinking, well before university. For many, GENIUS represents not only strong academic preparation but a rare chance to explore emerging fields and build confidence as future contributors to science, technology, and healthcare.

Another one of MetroPrep's exclusive offerings is The SMITH Program—School of Music, Integrated Arts, Theatre, and Humanities—which was developed to expand students’ creativity, critical thinking, and leadership skills within a rigorous academic environment. Through SMITH, MetroPrep students explore the arts not as extracurricular add-ons, but as core disciplines that foster innovation, confidence, and expression across all areas of learning.

Founded by Principal Ryan Seeley, the SMITH Program stands as a testament to MetroPrep’s commitment to individuality, excellence, and innovation. With a Master’s degree in Drama from the University of Toronto and professional experience in acting, directing, and music, Seeley envisioned a program that would integrate the arts and humanities into the very fabric of a student’s academic journey. The result is a program that inspires students to explore their talents, challenge assumptions, and develop the creative confidence needed to shape the world around them.

At Metropolitan Preparatory Academy, education is not just about personal achievement—it is about making a difference. That philosophy comes to life through MetroPrep’s remarkable Impact Program, spearheaded by Vice Principal Joanna Johnson, a passionate advocate for student empowerment and social action.

“The world does not just need smart people. It needs leaders with courage, compassion, and conviction,” says Johnson. “Impact is about helping students discover that their voices matter—and that they can change the world around them.”

Support systems

MetroPrep believes that academic excellence is only possible when students feel supported. An outstanding team of teachers, guidance counsellors, and academic advisors work closely with students and families to provide mentorship, intervention, and encouragement at every step.

The school's guidance program starts early, with course selection support in the middle school years and intensive university preparation in the senior grades. Students receive one-on-one counselling, individualized academic planning, and ongoing mentorship to ensure they are on track to achieve their goals.

Athletics and wellness

At Metropolitan Preparatory Academy, athletics and wellness are essential pillars of a well-rounded education. MetroPrep treats sports and health as integral to student development, building not only physical fitness but also emotional resilience, teamwork, leadership, and school spirit.

MetroPrep’s commitment to student health extends well beyond organized sports. The school actively fosters a culture of wellness that includes daily physical activity and mental health initiatives, as well as new facilities. The upcoming construction of MetroPrep’s state-of-the-art gymnasium (breaking ground in summer 2025) will provide expanded facilities for fitness, athletics, and health education programs.

Student life

“Our students are at the heart of everything we do,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “We are not just preparing them for university. We are preparing them for life—and that means giving them the confidence, the leadership skills, and the emotional resilience to thrive in any environment.”

MetroPrep’s vibrant student life ensures that every student feels connected, engaged, and supported—not just as learners, but as individuals. From the moment students walk through the doors, they find more than classrooms and textbooks—they find a community.

“School should be about more than just marks. It should be about discovery, connection, and growth,” says Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “At MetroPrep, we work hard to make sure every student feels seen, valued, and empowered."
