MESSAGE FROM THE LEADERSHIP

We asked Ryan A. Seeley, Principal, Director of SMITH at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy for their message.

They shared an overview of the vision, values, and guiding principles that shape both their leadership and the student experience at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy.

Ryan A. Seeley, Principal, Director of SMITH
Hons. B.A., M.A.

As you contemplate the next steps in your educational journey, I invite you to consider a future filled with boundless possibilities that begins right here at MetroPrep. We often say that “our teachers don’t just teach courses, they teach students”. This motto is essential to our vision, mission, and voice as one of Toronto’s most unique and respected private schools.

Success in life is about setting clear, achievable goals and having the determination to reach them. Success also involves others.

It is about collaboration, listening, having critical conversations about meaningful ideas and about supporting others to be the best versions of themselves. It may seem straightforward, but the foundation of any achievement is believing in yourself and your path. It’s crucial not to let moments pass you by — instead, seize the day.

At MetroPrep, we don’t just prepare you for academic success; we prepare you for life in a globalized world. Our structured, yet nurturing environment encourages active involvement, fresh ideas, and a vibrant enthusiasm for learning. Here, you will find a diverse and accepting community that not only supports your ambitions but also inspires you to expand your horizons.

As you make decisions about your future, consider MetroPrep if you seek a school that values commitment, creativity, and community. We are dedicated to helping each student set and surpass their own personal and academic goals.

Best wishes for a successful and enriching academic year. I look forward to the possibility of you joining our MetroPrep family and
discovering your true potential with us.

Warmly,

Ryan Seeley

Principal

INTERVIEW WITH THE LEADERSHIP

We interviewed Ryan Seeley, Vice Principal at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy.

We asked them about their approach to education, the mission of their school, and the vision guiding their decisions.

Ryan Seeley, Vice Principal of Metropolitan Preparatory Academy, talks with us about the school's compassionate and balanced approach, combined with academic rigour. He emphasises personalised attention and the nurturing environment. With a focus on a well-rounded education integrating science and arts, he highly regards the dedicated faculty and the close-knit, inclusive community that makes Metro Prep into a second home for many students.

  • Highlights from the interview

    • Our central values are compassion and communication. The teachers are really compassionate people, and we really like to empathise with what teenagers are going through and what their families are going through. We love to talk to the kids. We spend an enormous amount of time, especially our Principal, Wayne, sitting down and discussing various things. It's not just about academic talks but about their life, their future aspirations, or just casual conversations about their weekend or their favourite subjects.

    • We are a very academic school with a strong focus on the sciences, including maths, STEM, and computer science. We also take the arts seriously, integrating it well with our science subjects. Our teachers are passionate and skilled, always striving to improve and explore new aspects of their subjects. The teaching staff is experienced, with some having been with us for a very long time.

    • At our school, we emphasize teaching students, not just courses.

    • I think in Preparatory Academies, we want to prepare you for the future, which doesn’t necessarily mean we're preparing you to become a doctor or a lawyer. A lot of private schools are getting better at understanding what the student needs and wants. We foster a lot of debates at our school and encourage the healthy exchange of opinions. Wayne liked to hire people who are different from him, which proved to be beneficial over time.

    • One common aspect that many families appreciate is our reputation for genuinely caring for each student. Some students may have learning issues like dyslexia or attention deficit, and we provide the necessary support, ensuring they can join clubs that suit their interests or receive help in areas where they are lagging. Families feel safe sending their kids to our school because we pay close attention to every student, creating a positive and inclusive culture.

    • We don't have a lot of student conflicts, primarily due to our small school enrollment which means there are fewer issues to deal with. When a student joins Metro, we have a code of conduct that they are required to read and sign. We maintain a safe and secure environment, addressing any issues promptly with the necessary investigations to understand the situation better. The atmosphere is professional, and teachers enjoy working here, which significantly reduces the occurrence of conflicts.

    • I wouldn't say the school is solely focused on academics and facilitating students' entry into university. This happens naturally because of our focus on individual students. By truly understanding and listening to the students, we motivate them to work harder and achieve their goals. We assist them with the application process for universities, preparing them well for the comprehensive procedures involved in university admissions. Due to our smaller size, we can offer a lot of interpersonal connections and attention to the students, helping them navigate changes and make informed decisions.

    • I like the loyalty that we have at our school. I've been there for 20 years and I've worked with a lot of the same people. Of course, we have new teachers as well, but I like that it feels like a second home to me. So, I feel very comfortable in my role there since I started in 2001.

    • When someone starts working at Metro, they often remark on the friendliness and the pleasant work environment. In my position, I occasionally deal with issues, but they are significantly fewer compared to what some of my friends experience in other schools. This stability creates a positive work environment, which is crucial in maintaining the upbeat spirit and progressiveness of our school. Teachers get along well, contributing to a conducive and collaborative work environment.

    • I guess about 98% of students stay with us until they graduate in Grade 12. Even if students join us in the later grades, they quickly adapt and become a part of the inclusive and fun environment we offer. They are encouraged to participate in various activities, forming bonds and enjoying a full experience. Students who join later also find themselves immersed and feeling like a true Metro prep kid.

    • A lot of our students tell us that Metro becomes their second home. The school environment is friendly and caring, creating a homely atmosphere where students can leave their home troubles at the door. The school's physical surroundings also contribute to this, being warm and inviting. The faculty maintains a harmonious relationship, ensuring that students do not witness conflicts that can sometimes occur in smaller settings.

    • The type of student who might not enjoy Metro would be someone looking for a large school with many students, big hallways, and rooms, or a more traditional school model with a long history and uniform requirements. Metro is a small, close-knit school with personalised classrooms and curriculum. We aim to remain modern and progressive, instead of holding onto older traditions, though we do have our traditions.

    • Our students enjoy the co-educational setting, because it mirrors the real world where they will work with various kinds of people. If a student is seeking a more traditional old school environment, they might not find Metro to their liking as we do not adhere to older customs like uniforms. At Metro, students who are seeking something different find what they are looking for.

Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

They're approachable and engaged.

Descriptions from parents and students highlight how approachable and personable the leadership at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy is, creating a welcoming and accessible environment for the school community.

We were surprised by how down-to-earth and approachable the leadership at Metro Prep is. The principal and vice principals are willing to talk to parents at any time. They also know my child really well, not only because they teach classes, but also they get actively involved in students' extracurricular activities. There were no bureaucracies, things get done promptly, and I’ve always felt comfortable talking to the leadership, sharing my thoughts, getting feedback, and asking for advice.
I found the administration and the teachers very accessible at Metro Prep. They take the time to have conversations with each parent, whether with any concerns or whether just to check in to say hello. Anytime you need to get in contact with them, you could do it by email, by giving a call. Administration as well, they are all very accessible, and easy to talk to.
It is hard for me to talk about my experience within the application process because I don’t recall a lot from it. My dad went to the school in the eighties and because he didn’t feel my brother reaching his fullest potential at his previous school, he called the principal and asked if there was a possibility for my brother to attend. The principal remembered exactly who my dad was and was so excited at the thought of his kid attending the school as well. My brother went to the school a year before me and absolutely loved it. He convinced me to come for a tour and meet all his teachers and friends. During my tour I met many of the teachers and sat down and talked with the principal. I knew then and there that this was where I wanted to spend the rest of my secondary education.

They're compassionate and communicative.

Insights from students and officials reveal that the educators at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy prioritize compassion and communication, dedicating time to understand and support their students.

Our central values are compassion and communication.
The principal has this love and passion for education, which helps the teachers.
I am so grateful to the Principal for everything he's done for me, for the opportunities he's provided me with. My family has been very happy with my decision to attend. I have plenty of friends who've had a great experience at Metro Prep and now all of their younger siblings attend. I just can't recommend the school enough.
