    Seven benefits of pottery camps for kids

    Here are seven benefits and advantages kids gain from attending a pottery camp: 

    Motor skills development and tactile therapy. There’s pounding, pinching, and poking. They squeeze clay, coil it, bend it, rip it, and flatten it. It’s a healthy outlet for them, as they learn new things they can do with their hands. 

    They express themselves creatively. Kids get hands-on experience imagining and creating something. They discover their artistic side. Learn more about how camps explore creativity.

    They meet kids with shared interests and gain friends. Camp brings together kids from the same city or area with the same interests. The freeform setting of camp leads to casual conversations and they discover more things in common. 

    They grow in independence and other key traits. Camp is a safe space away from parents where they learn to trust leaders and others around them. The nature of the experience helps them grow in confidence and learn personal responsibility.

    Sensory stimulation and time off screens. Kids work hands-on, actively creating items out of clay, ceramics, or other materials. Gaming and other screen-based activities have some value, but they encourage passivity and couch-potatoing, which is detrimental to physical and mental health. 

    Problem-solving and intellectual stimulation. Building and creating leads to problems, solved by pottery camp kids working through them. 

    A sense of accomplishment. Kids start with raw materials, learn processes for molding, and then take away end products that they themselves made.

    The best way to know a camp is right for your child is to meet with them face-to-face. And the best way to meet a lot of camps is at the Camp Expo, held every February.

    • How much focus is there on pottery? What are the camp’s other activities? 
    • Are there any prerequisites for the camp?
    • Does my child need to bring anything like special clothing or equipment? 
    • How are campers grouped and how big are the groups? 
    • What is the ratio of leaders-to-children in each group? 
    • How are discipline and bullying handled at the pottery camp? 
    • What are instructors’ qualifications and how long have they been teaching? 
    • What are their certifications?
    • What’s the final goal or takeaway for campers?
