Broadly speaking, the cost of boarding schools in Canada reflects the cost private school tuition in general, though with premiums added to cover housing and meals.
Many Canadian boarding schools offer financial aid, including scholarships and bursaries. Financial aid is needs-based, and financial aid programs are created as a means of broadening the student base and attracting students, independent of means, who will contribute most to the culture of the school. Generally speaking, the larger and more expensive schools provide the most aid.
You can read more about financial aid and scholarships in our dedicated guide.

There are many affordable boarding schools in Canada, many of which have an international reputation. Whether a Canadian citizen or international student, these schools offer a specialized educational system devoted to the social and intellectual advancement of their students.
Some Canadian boarding schools are prep schools, in that they prepare students well for university and post-secondary education. Some also cater to specific kinds of students, including troubled youth (or teens), special needs, learning disabilities, and ADHD students. And, of course, there are boarding schools in Canada for high school, middle school, and elementary school students.

Each province in Canada is governed by a ministry of education. Therefore it's important when choosing a boarding school in Canada that you consider this before applying. For example, language requirements will differ between Quebec and Saskatchewan, while the compulsory age of schooling is until 17 years of age in Manitoba and 18 in New Brunswick.
Canadian boarding schools normally have extensive facilities for academic, artistic, and athletic learning, depending on their type and in what subject they specialize in.
Operating hours of these facilities cater to the students attending the school, making them not only more accessible to them, but also safer than those that are off premises. And being a country that embraces advancements in technology, the latest computers and the availability of other modern technical equipment is standard in all schools.
But what if the Canadian boarding school you're considering lacks a specific facility that you're looking for? No problem! With the leadership of the faculty and in organized field trips, students can continue learning beyond the walls of the classroom, as they partake in all the natural and cultural splendor Canada has to offer.
Across Canada, high school graduation requirements, for boarding schools and other schools, are set by the provincial boards, not the federal government. Therefore, graduation requirements vary between provinces based on provincial criteria and curricula. Provinces also define the elements of those criteria, including what a "credit" represents, which can make a direct comparison of degree requirements difficult. For example, in BC a credit represents 30 hours of in-class instruction; in Ontario a credit represents the completion of an entire course, not a portion of it. Therefore, in order to graduate, students in Ontario are required to complete 30 credits in grades 9 through 12. In British Columbia 80 credits are required in grades 10 through 12.
Despite what the numbers might seem to suggest, the reality is that graduation requirements vary only superficially between the provinces. All require that students study English/French, mathematics, science, Canadian history, geography, and health. In addition to those core subjects, all provinces offer optional courses for credit, and students are free to choose among them. These include courses in technology and computer studies, graphic and performing arts, world studies, international languages, social studies, and cooperative education.
In addition to classwork, students must demonstrate an involvement in community service beyond the campus, though many boarding schools choose to exceed provincial guidelines there as well. Students enrolled at a school offering the International Baccalaureate Programme, for example, are required to complete 50 hours of volunteer service in order to graduate, exceeding the baseline in all provinces.
Many Canadian boarding schools formally require participation in athletics, courses international languages, or participation in extracurricular programs, such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Often, these too are included as requirements in order to graduate. All diploma requirements imposed in addition to provincial requirements are at the discretion of the individual schools and do not affect the receipt of the provincial diploma. Any additional requirements made by private institutions are imposed to reflect the core values of the school as they pertain to diversity, service, leadership, and academics.
Many of the best-known Canadian boarding schools were founded in the late 19th century: Pickering College, 1842; Bishop Strachan School, 1867; Stanstead College, 1872; Ashbury College, 1891; St. Andrew's College, 1899. Life there, at least in the early days, was spartan and challenging in ways that no boarding school is today. At Upper Canada College, Frederick Hutt, a student in the 1830s, wrote to his brother, "I hope you will send plenty of nuts and cakes as I can hardly subsist on what we get."
There was a strong association with the military. The Cadet Corps of Upper Canada College was begun in 1869, and through its 127-year history it remained an integral part of school life. Students took part in regular drills and exercises, including those with active rounds. Boys were expected be prepared for deployment at any time, as occasionally they were. During the Fenian Raids of 1866 UCC students were mobilized to guard military buildings and the port in Toronto.
In time, however, the cadet programs began to feel less relevant, more relics of an earlier time, as did some of the other traditions that Canadian boarding schools, and indeed all schools, followed. Pickering College, despite a long history, was an early adopter of a more open, less punitive, more collaborative approach to education. In 1930, Joseph McCully, headmaster of Pickering College wrote "we have realized that it is impossible to force boys to become educated; long hours of fatiguing drill and arduous driving on the part of the staff may succeed in cramming the heads of small boys with a vast collection of heterogeneous and unrelated facts, but such a result is not education." Instead, he goes on, the goal of education should be to provide mentorship, and in providing an opportunity to develop talents and resiliency. Taylor Statton, head of character development at Pickering College, wrote in 1930 that:
The 'habit of obedience' forced upon the impressionable nature of a child does not develop judgment and will, but does develop that fatal facility in following other people's wills, which tends to make us a hopeless mob & dash;mere sheep, instead of wise, free, strong individuals. The habit of submission to authority, the long, deeply impressed conviction that to 'be good' is to 'give up';that there is virtue in the act of surrender;this is one of the sources from which we continually replenish human weakness … Those who know no other way of modifying a child's behaviour than through 'making him mind' suppose that if he were not make to mind he must be utterly neglected. … the rich years of childhood should be passed in the acquiring the habits of self-direction.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better description of what boarding in Canada, in the decades since, has become.
"Boarding school is not just a school where people live," says Clayton Johnson, "it is a way of life." Johnson is admissions director at Brentwood College School on Vancouver Island, in BC. "Boarding is all encompassing and life altering. It is the totality of this experience that is the 'value added' of boarding."
Because of how we discuss it, it's easy to focus on living arrangements. However, students don't attend boarding school because they need somewhere to live. Rather, the living arrangements are a necessity of the kind of instruction that Canadian boarding schools intend. "When you're operating within an independent school, in a smaller community, you can focus on values more, developing character and allowing kids to find their own place," says Innes van Nostrand, principal of Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario. "And boarding is a hothouse that allows that to happen." As such, boarding is less about what it is—schools where students and instructors live together on campus—than the kind of education that living on site, within a community of peers and mentors, can provide.
While we tend to evaluate schools through objective measures—size, testing results, university placement—a student's fit within a school, and ultimately their academic success, is often dependent on less tangible things, such as feel and culture. For some students, simply joining an academic community, one that respects learning, can itself transformative. When he enrolled at a boarding school, author John Green says, for the first time in his life, "I became a learner. And I became a learner because I found myself in a community of learners. I found myself surrounded by people who celebrated intellectualism and engagement … I started to learn, because learning was cool."
While a majority of the earliest schools began as boys' schools, or with an overt religious affiliation, in time many become co-ed and adapted their curricula to serve a more diverse student population. Bishop's College School, for example, was founded in 1836 as an Anglican boys' school serving the families of the Golden Square Mile, an Anglophone enclave of Montreal. The contrast between then and now couldn't be more stark—today the student population is drawn from more than a dozen countries and the full range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Of course, that's true of all boarding schools in Canada today. "Walk into any boarding school today," says Anne-Marie Kee, Executive Director of CAIS, "and you'll find a vibrant, highly energized student body, housed in first-rate surroundings and engaged in more activities than you can imagine."
